Dar Es Salaam to Capetown
« on: July 17, 2010, 03:56:17 pm »
Hello, first post on this forum.

OK, this may just be dreaming, but I am looking at the possibility of flying my own bike into Dar from the UK and riding down to Capetown via Zambia, Bots and Namibia towards the end of 2011.

I realise that I'd be there at the beginning of the rains, but hopefully early enough to avoid the worst of it, but my first concern is time.  Would it be do-able in around three weeks?  I wouldn't be doing anything particularly gnarly, but it is a little difficult to get a handle on the distances involved.

Also, how mad is Dar?  Is it likely to take me ages to get the bike out from the airport?  I'm hoping that flying the bike in will be a much better bet than by ship which I know can mean massive delays.

I've rented a few times in SA (few of my reports are on ADVrider) and I estimate the the break even point for shipping v renting (if indeed that were possible in Tanz) is about 3 weeks (coincidentally the maximum time I can take off), also it's getting too stressful riding on the loose stuff on someone elses GS  :o

Cheers

This is an easy three week trip - Tar all the way with potholes, buses, heavy vehicles and bicycles. You should only try to travel in daylight if possible and you should include Malawi. I take it that this is a oneway trip DAR to Cape Town

Nice trip. I have done it in 6 days with a 1300 corolla...

Yeah, it can be done, it really depends on the route you will be taking.

When I went from Dar to CT we went down the coast and came down through Moz, the roads are worse and it takes a little longer. That being said, if you are going to come down the other side of lake Malawi I would say if you are really rushing you can do it in 14 days, so your 3 week plan will be fine.

Thanks for the info.  Seeems as though getting the bike out of Dar airport should be pretty straight forward too according to another contact I made.  If it turns out that there is more to see than three weeks will allow (quite likely!) we may be able to ship out from Joburg as we've already seen a reasonable chunk of the country south of Windhoek.
