Long Way Down bike for sale

One of the three bikes used in the Long Way Down series, which saw Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman and camera man Claudio von Planta travel from the north of Scotland to Cape Town, is up for sale on the Car and Classic website.

The advertised BMW R 1200 GS Adventure has run up a total of 23 000km on its epic north-south voyage and has been left in the same mucky condition it was when the team arrived in Cape Town so as to remain a “genuine piece of motorcycle history”.

According to its classified advertisement, the bike comes with close to R35 000 worth of extras including Touratech boxes, hand guards, screen and original tank bag (which even has the route map still in its plastic sleeve).

Compared to the R580 000 which a replica of Ewan and Charley’s bike fetched at a UNICEF auction, the R116 000 asking price for this authentic bike seems more than reasonable. Even if it does have some damage to the front mudguard, screen and right bump pad.

The classified doesn’t make any specific reference to which “celebrity owner” it was who rode this bike, but you can be pretty darn certain that if it had been Charley or Ewan’s it would have been all over the ad. Which only leaves Claudio. Still, we don’t think it is a half bad deal.

Would you fork out R116 000 for the pleasure of owning a bit of Long Way Down history?
