It's interesting to see how many different interpretations of what the Think Bike Campaign is or should be we find among the general public. From "Do you sell bikes?" to "So you want everyone to ride bikes?". "Are you a club?" is also a common question.

This little note is intended to make it more clear as to what Think Bike is and what it isn't.

The Think Bike campaign is a registered non-profit organization with the following simple aims:

* to create awareness and educate motorists and motorcyclists alike on the issues and dangers affecting motorcycles on the roads.
* to reduce unnecessary accident rates by means of the above.

We set out to achieve this chiefly by publicity. Bumper stickers, banners, stickers on bikes, branded t-shirts, reflective vests, etc. all serve to help make the Think Bike logo well known. Every time anyone sees the Think Bike logo, we hope they will think about bikes for a few seconds. On the highways and roads, this can only save lives.

We also push the message via posters, TV interviews, magazine articles and appearing at major events such as the AMID show and the Toyrun, and marshalling high profile events such as the 94.7 cycle race.

Think Bike is funded entirely by sponsorships, donations, membership and regalia sales. We have no employees nor funds to pay them; all the people you see working for Think Bike are volunteers with at least one full-time job.

What Think Bike is not is a law enforcement agency. We certainly do not condone the breaking of the law by bikers, from speeding to removal of number plates to drinking and driving. But there are government agencies tasked to address these issues. We choose to leave them to the considered judgement of the individual biker, whom we believe is capable of making his or her own rational choices.

We recognise that motorcyclists (or bikers) are by nature individualists. Our aim is not to police their actions or change the biking culture, but rather to encourage bikers to think. To use their brains when deciding how and where to ride in what fashion. Promoting the use of protective gear, sensible restraint when riding in traffic or in dangerous conditions and considerate riding habits form part of this.

Finally, please keep in mind that in the interests of publicity and spreading the message, we sell Think Bike branded goods to anyone who will pay for them. This means that it is impossible for Think Bike to monitor the behaviour of those wearing the logo. Think Bike should therefore not be held responsible for the biker seen drinking a beer while wearing a Think Bike t-shirt, nor the reckless rider wearing a Think Bike branded reflective vest. Our members and supporters are all individuals and responsible for their own behaviour.
