« on: September 30, 2010, 05:42:43 pm »
Hi Dogs!

Will start a small ride report as I get some more time :thumleft:
Basically just got in and put my feet up

The Super 10 did 4950km :thumleft: All the way to Swazi and then off to JHB. JHB to Upington. Upington back to HOME :thumleft:
As soon as I have unpacked all my things, will get some pictures loaded.

The XT rally was great! Met a few Dogs :thumleft: and some of the Yamaha representatives

Stayed over at Sakkie se gat in Upington. Was a great spot! Cheap, safe and in town next to the River!

Monday the 20th a friend of mine and I, left for the XT rally in Swazi. We left at about 12pm as Gerit(friend) had to finish off some work. We were all packed and headed out from Durbanville on the N1 towards Worcester where we turned off and headed for Route 62 to Oudshoorn. The temp was about the mid 30. I have one of those Pressure monitors on the bike and noted that the pressures increased with a BAR.  So we stopped and I deflated the tires at Robertson. From there we headed east. It was a great ride, long and beautiful views.
When we got to Oudshoorn, the first place that we looked for was a chemist! Needed some pills for my back, thought that I had packed them, but was forgotten. We headed out to DeRust were we pulled in to a B&B for a nigts rest. Next morning after a good breakfast we headed for Willowmore then on to Middelburg. From there we headed to Burgersdorp. There a farmer in his Toyota Hilux 2.2D almost took me out in town. Wide open roads and just turn as if he owns the town. But my angel was looking over me! Had a light snack at one of the country stile snack bars. From Burgerdorp we headed toward Aliwal-North. From there we headed to Rouxville and on to Wepener. We wanted to pull in for a nights rest, but was amazed on what they charge for a bed! Thought it was made of gold! But it was Prince Cherles lodge! So we headed on. At Hobhouse the GPS said there was 2 B&B, but could not find them. At a corner house where there was a board saying “Bikers welcome” a friendly gent asked if we needed help? I replied and said we looking for a bed and pillow. He replied and said we must head on towards Ficksburg and as the 2 hills meet, turn right. So we did. Found the turn-off as he said! Mabula Lodge. As we entered the Lodge, there where a few Orex looking at us as my orande headlights pierced their eyes. I thought this place would be much more than Wepener! As we headed up to reception, we found two friendly gents standing outside. Before we could take helmets of, they welcomed us and said we must come in for some hot coffee. As I removed my helmet, asked if they had accommodation? He replied “Yes!”  Hundred Rand. I looked at Gerit as we headed for the restaurant. Sat down for some nice hot coffee. After the coffee and our host said we must have a few drinks to warm up some more, I asked again how much as I did not think we heard correct as, we were at a Game Lodge! Again was said “ Hundred Rand” We headed for our bikes where we took our stuff to our rooms. Then we returned for a few drinks and a great supper! A proper T-bone Stake and some chips as well as some pudding. We were asked, what time would we like our breakfast and headed for some rest.
Next morning we finished up and headed for the restaurant where as we walked in coffee was on the table and they where waiting for us. Had a great breakfast! After breakfast walked over to pay. The bill was handed over ant I thought it was for one person, paid and waited as Gerit was waiting to pay his share. No that was for two. R316 for the two of us! That was for 2 coffee’s, a brandy and coke, supper and breakfast and a bed! A great place and will go there again! So after saying goodbye’s we headed for Harrismith. But as we got to Clerence we stopped for some coffee and pancakes. Stomach full, we headed through the Golded Gate towards Harrismith. When we arrived there stopped at the Spur for some lunch. We then decided to head for Howick, so I could say Hi to my folks.
The next morning we headed for Swazi through Oshoek border post. We arrived there at about 1pm, it did not take to long to go through. We arrived at Hawane Resort, not much of the people where there yet.  So we sat around and relaxed and chatted to the few that was there. We unpacked our things into our tents. The ones that asked for camping, got a free Yamaha 2man tent.  We headed for the showers, which was cold! As they had water problems which was sorted out very quick. Later on we headed for supper. Now, for the price we paid for the XT rally, I would pay that any time if we have the food what we were served over the whole weekend. Well worth it! Really great food. After dinner there was a briefing for the next days rides. We then headed for our sleeping tents. Was not long, I was in lalla land.
Next morning was a great breakfast and headed of to our bikes and groups as to what one would like to ride, Scenic or technical. As I still had to get home, did the scenic route. That was 7 hours of riding! But great dirt roads and views! Got back that afternoon and headed for the showers. Dinner was served on the hour and not a minute to late! After dinner a de-briefing and also what is installed for the next day. As soon as that was done I headed for my tent. Next morning Gerit, Mark and myself decided to do our own trip. All three of us from the Cape and all ROAD there bikes up! Not on a trailer.  We did a route around the dam, great twisty’s and views. We had to be back at 2pm for some fun.
Got back and there where some drinks waiting. We sat around and as everybody got back, they started with some skills challenge. Prizes where awarded to those who could ride. When the fun ended we started getting things packed and ready for the morning departure. Dinner was served and was great! Then it was prize giving and some fund raising. It was a great evening.
Next morning I was packed and ready and departed with Adventurer and Bertis the medic towards JHB. At the border it took about an Hour and half to exit and enter SA. As soon as that was done, we hit the road. Bertis did great on his 660z with a “two brothers” exhaust. Not bad keeping up with 2 Super Ten’s! I followed Bertis as he stays in Centurion and I was heading for Roodepoort.
Monday morning I met Bertis at his place as he was going to show me, where I could put my TKC on as the Battle Wings saw there days. I got to Bartis’s place at 8am and had some coffee, waiting for my wife to follow us to the bike shop as she had the bakkie. Soon she arrived and we headed to Just Bike Tyres. There I met Rolf. He assisted me on making up my mind as to what to do. Well I bought a rear Mitas E08. Great service! Headed to Roodepoort and had a few days rest with family. My wife and kids drove up to JHB as my daughter was going to compete in this years Judo SA championship. Wednesday morning my son, Renier 10 years old, headed for Cape-Town….but the long way down! We headed for Upington. On route there was a few roadwork’s, which made the road long!. We arrived in Upington at 4.30pm. Got the coordinates for “Sakkie se Ark” from a friend and was a great rest camp. Pitched tent and Renier had a cooldown in the pool, after that we sat on the banks of the Orange River. Watched the sun set and did a bit of bonding. Went for a warm shower, as it was not really needed as it was 29 deg still at that time of day. We headed towards the Spur where we treated ourselves for some grub. Got to bed a bit late, as Renier battled to wake up the next morning. But I think the long day on a bike was taking its toll on him. So we both decided to take a direct route home. For a 10 year old and his first time on a long trip, I do take my hat off for him. He made me very proud, told me where he did not feel safe, where I overtook trucks and what he thought of what other drivers did. I forgot that the route that we where taking did not have any Wimpy’s, so the poor fellow, was given a few packets of chips and red bulls. The lack of food was only noticed when we got home. When we got to Calvinia we took a dirt road to Clanwilliam through Botterkloof pass. The Mitas was a great choice of tyre! Fully loaded and great on tar and dirt.
We arrived safe home at 4pm on Thursday a Total of 4950 km in 8 and half days. The Super Ten was a great machine and a great ride. No problems and a trusty Iron horse!
That concludes my Cape to Swazi RR
