call me full of crap but i have my heart set on buying new. in the 60-75K range. at the moment my options are triumph scrambler, bm f650gs, bm dakar, honda transalp, suzuki wee-strom

Not full of it at all !

You know what you can afford and want to spend and you know you want new. That at least narrowed it down somehow.

I can guarantee you if you go for the Triumph Scrambler it would be quite a conversation starter wherever you go.

02/02/12 - RIP Glen - the Arrow of Elliot and the little man with the big heart that truly was larger than life.

You have touched us and left us better for having known you - even if it was only briefly.

For grabbing the moment and living the day It's been way too early that you were taken away

As I said
I do not speak from experience or some deep pool of knowledge, I was merely expressing my feelings on the bike

but if what I have read above is true and the bike is reliable and well constructed, then I'm willing to change my opinion.
I also had no idea it was so affordable - that came as a surprise.

Wes, if you like it, I say go for it.
I promise not to act as if I don't know you when you park it next to my bike outside Kriges :D

As for showing off... I am the last person to comment negatively on that. I didn't buy a white riding suit and a 1200GSA painted in Valentine's day colours to blend into the crowd! and don't believe me when I try to convince you that I'm modest

A few specs to compare

TA/BMW/KLR/VStrom/Triumph

Curb Weight - 194/192/180/?/222

Engine - 647/652/651/625/865

Power - 40/37/35/49  /40

Seat height - 850/870/870/820/825

Wheelbase - 1505/1489/1490/1540/1500

Fuel - 19.6/17.3/23/25.5/16.6

Front Wheel - 21/21/21/19/19

What your address? I'll come stop you doing something stupid!

Only reason to buy it is because it is radical and different, imo.

BUT I don't know much about bikes.  I might read the comparison above totally wrong.

wes

Someone has to say it so I will.

If you want to swan around the Cape Town sidewalk coffee shops like a Mediterranean lounge lizard, stick to the Vespa or waste more money and buy a Truimph. If you want a proper bike buy something else. That Triumph is neither here nor there, what is it? Not a road bike, not an off road bike, at best a few sand roads with wind blast from hell and thats if the wind is not blowing. That's one day a year down there. Yes it can go where an 1150 can go, but so can my mountain bike, hell come to think of it I could walk where an 1150 could ride, but who wants to do that?

also...if for some mysterious future reason you decide to sell the bike, who's gonna buy it?
You think you have trouble selling the vespir? I very much doubt the market for Triumph Scramblers is any bigger - probably smaller!

at least with the Dakar you won't loose too much and the bike is for damn certain popular enough to sell second hand when you are done with it

sorry to be a profit of zoom

Its honest about the pose and offroad ability, unlike the BMW.
You think the big GS's are offroad bikes, you living in dreamland.

They are the same class, no doubt.
