why thehuge price difference!!!!!!!
« on: December 01, 2010, 08:43:45 am »
Im looking at a helmet up grade and natually thought of getting an Arai as they are "the best".

I went into a bike shop in CPT city centre and they have Arai there for 10k! I was then chatting to a friend and he said that he gets his helmets from England or the States, so checked online and found this: http://www.motoward.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=508_82_498&products_id=1495

the cost for the same Arai is GBP 355. now lets do the maths shall we....

GBP 355.00 x 11.05 (todays rate on iol.co.za) = ZAR 3922.75 + 40% import duties = ZAR 5491.85 + 30% mark up = ZAR 7139.40!

so is the extra ZAR 3000 per helmet transport costs? surely not!

Now i understand that the guy in England is paying less that GBP 355 per helmet but im just going on that price.

or am i totally wrong on this?

I guess the new battle cry for bike business's should be....... bite the pillow im coming in dry!

Desert

You forgot to add that the UK dealer already added his mark up to the GBP of 355.

Frank Chicken???

KMSA are the local Arai distributors.  Remember that there are two parties making profit from that price, the distributor and the reseller.  Helmets are also extremely expensive to transport and store, they take up a lot of space, with a whole lot of air inside, and this needs to be figured into the eventual sales price.

You can get them cheaper from overseas, because generally shipping from there is by weight - as opposed to by volume, as is the case with shipping bulk in a container.

You can reach KMSA at 011 566 0333, ask for Justin at BikeWise.  I would assume that they would NOT sell you a helmet though, since they are the distributors, and don't actually sell to the public, only to dealers.

I don't know who Frank Chicken is.

Keep in mind also that the current stock of Arais might have been purchased a year or more ago when the Rand wasn't as strong. People tend to forget that the importers are not working on the current exchange rate.

Except when the rand weakens, then prices all go up the very next day  >:D
