*Who's done the ROOF*

Tell us about it...

Could an average rider finish it? Are there entry requirements? Which bikes compete? How did you find it?

Go check out e-dirt, lots of personal stories, tips, training advice etc there. I read Avontier's post - he has done it.

I`ve entered and completed 5  between 2002 and 2006 - back then it was organised by LORA (Lesotho Offroad assosiation) and was very different to today!
It has developed into a really extreme event! Back in the day we rode the "Runts and twassholes" class  The same route as the National quad guys, still a long day in the saddle (240kms a day) 2006 I won the Ullyses class and finished with no skin on my butt cheecks! Today it is a lot shorter but far more challenging! Fitness is the key!

awesome! I watched the video of that hill climb - vertical boulders etc. Is a lot of it as extreme as that?

Did the Roof as well --1978

Till a few years ago used to be Racing and lots of Fun --today it forms part of the EXTREME races -- eg:Erzberg -Romaniacs--

You will trash any bike riding it and it becomes very expensive for the Privateer as well

Would love to ride it again but could not see myself abusing my bike the way they do nowdays.

Maybe just maybe i can loan a bike  :peepwall:

I have never done the roof, but what I can say is that anything is possible.  If you make the decision to do it, I mean really make it and commit - you can and will finish. :thumleft:

But unless you are into the racing scene, you are going to have to damn hard to get there. I suggest you try a couple of enduros just to see where you lie in terms of skills and fitness. You will probably enjoy them immensely, though the first one is more often than not a serious bitch-slap to your ego. I strongly advize you to practice and get fit. Your riding skills will improve dramatically, literally week-to-week if you keep it up for any amount of time. Importantly, it will get you ready for an attempt on the roof.

The andrenaline rush and satisfaction of racing is second to none, believe me.  :ricky:

yep, but it won't be in one piece by the end of the roof  :-\

I guess I'd like to treat it as a race against the elements, rather than a race against others. My goal would be simply to FINISH!

I did the Roof a few years ago, but that was back when they had the Clubman class for people who stand closer to the urinals. It was half the distance of the main race, and missed out all the really difficult passes. Even so, it still took me about ten hours to finish, and I spent every evening afterwards walking like I had just got out of prison.

people talk about pre, and post 2007 roof, the pre one was doable, the post one, to finnish the gold is near impossible for a normal person, it's atleast 2 years  of hard training, and aquiring the correct riding skill, before you can even concider it. Brian capper, who rides for a living, is one of the best trials riders out there, just finished with seconds to spare. so realistically, if you're head isn't  in the right place, you're not very good at riding tech,, and not very fit, then you won't manage a finnish.
for eg. about 10 of ktm cpt's riders went up, allot of them are top 10 runners in the regionals, and only one of them managed a finnish

I did the Winterberg in 2003. It rained the whole weekend, took me 8 hours to complete one lap, it was an absolute nightmare.
