Just back to to topic on how difficult the current Roof is- on Friday 294 bikes started the day, only 94 bikes passed us at 14:00 that afternoon with still 20 km to DSP (most riders exit at this point). The most difficult sections were waiting after DSP.Only 20 bikes finished the race Saturday! Definitely not something for the average rider.
Nothing bigger than a 990-nothing better than a KTM

Todays Roof's are doable if you're prepared to accept your limitations.

You can go for a :

Bronze finish 65% of the route. You still have to be pretty fit but this is doable for most competent riders.

Silver finish. 75% of route. You have to be very fit, a national class rider finishing in the top 20 and have plenty of fasbyt. This is a big step up from bronze.

Gold finish. 100% of the route and you have to be friggin Super Man to finish before cut off time at 6pm.

Reason for so few bronze finishers at this years Roof was due to 45 minute bottle necks at a number of passes. I understand that this will addressed for next year.

I did my first Roof this year. And yes, was in my bucket list, with the Toyota 1000 and the Australasian Safari and who knows mabe the Dakar if the wife wins the lotto. ;D ;D
Is it do-able for the averidge rider. No. I do not think so in its current form. Not even for a fit rider wich I aint. I know a bout a realy good and fit rider who got time bared at Ramabata on Friday. On Saterday he finished silver but no medal. I lost about 15min on Two-tits. Others lost about hour mabe more.

The route on Friday was just to long. I think and stand to be corrected that only 55 finished Friday.
I did 3 EnduroWorld Lesotho trips , did a few Enduros and a few Offroads. Finished mostly between 16 and 20 in all races in WC. So i thaught to myself I am a 5 out of 10 rider. After the roof I  know I am about a 2.5.
Will I do it next year? YES,YES,YES. It is the ROOF! You are not supposed to finish it. Its Xtream! Its about personal best, biting the bullet, talking with God,bike and who ever is lisning at that moment. It's about the disipline of doing, riding rocks, mud and so much more. Seeing complete strangers cheering you on,helping you ride up hills you never thought of riding and in all just enjoying everymoment. I think its a deseas. ROCK Fever.
The correct bike for me is a KTM 300. I have ridden a lot of bikes on EnduroWorld tours and there is only 1 that makes my heart beat stronger.
Gues what I asked Santa to bring me this Cristmas? A 2010 3honey.
Cheers!!

Done the roof
Also crashed myself very broken in 2002

I would not do it in its current form on a bike that I paid for but would gladly give it a bash on someone elses bike

Done many Winterbergs as well quite a few with Edgy
Winterberg is very doable if you ride a lot
The weather can make it very hard in the rain and on one extremely Hot event I came across an oke from PE sitting and crying he was so dilarious from the heat

Hardest part was surviving the after party as Edgy can confirm

Jdog - Ride Rover once a week to get fit and then Ford test track/Pick n Pay for technique

i did it in 2008, got time bared on day 2. it cost me R30 000 + a new YZ250 and a year of weekends away from the family, i was the fittest i had ever been, we were given 6 hours to get to the top of baboons, the top guys took of at 06h00, i was 45min after them. cut of was taken from the top guys start time, i got there in 5h45min, well with in my 6h.

there was some very peed of guys on that hill......

i might not have finnished, but the roof never broke me or my bike, the orginisers did :dousing:

will i do it again, one day........if you are planing on doing it, try get to the enduro training sesions. money well worth spent, go up and spend some time in the hills.

Don't think I can even hike the roof, let alone ride it in it's current form.

I ride from Sasol to Rover and back through the sand every weekend - it IS good for fitness :-)

I also occasionally ride around P&P.

Would you like to come riding with me and put me through my paces? I'd love to chat about the winterberg and get some riding tips from you  :)
