Well after I sold the 650 I spent a really long time looking at a replacement bike, I got the 700V because it is probably the most underrated bike out there, more than enough power, confortable and can hold 130km/h loaded no issues, and it is flippin good value for money.

The 700 would do a trip like that no problem, I would spend a few bob and upgrade the suspension, I have progressive springs front and back on my 700 and it makes a world of difference, even on the 650 standard bottoming out the suspension was normal on some of those roads.

Is your pig looking for a rider, or is the rider looking for a riding companion? :)

Who's "we"?  :peepwall:
And is it Africa coast-to-coast, or South America coast-to-coast?

Hey Tony

It will be up Nam coast to Angola.. then Caprivi, vic falls, Kariba , touch the base of lake malawi and across to Moz and back down the Moz coast, vilanculos, tofu etc. By we I usually mean myself and Martin my travel buddy.

Sadly due to financial reasons the South America trip will be shelved and put on the bucket list, the maths just did'nt add up, the cost of getting a bike over, riding for 2 months and coming back is too steep for my pocket.

This sounds like it's gonna be a real good one!
I'd subscribe to the ride report now if I could  ;D

Muzzy

As a novice I read this RR with so much interest in the trip and especially the photos.  I take my hat off to you for doing this after the big fall in NAM.

Since joining this forum this was the one RR that kept me glued to the PC, laptop and I Pad.

Thank you for this report.  I now also want to do something similar.  Just a smaller scale as MUMMY thinks this is a MIDLIFE CRISIS.  ;D

Well with 2 kids at varsity and baby going to Matric it might be just a dream.

Once again THANK YOU :thumleft:

:thumleft: your comment is greatly appreciated.

If you want to do something smaller scale just go to Malawi and back, that will cut the trip in half at least, it all depends on how you like to travel, where we took something like 59 days on our Africa trip some okes do the same trip in 30 days. There are some nice threads at the moment with guys going to Malawi.. up through Bots, Vic falls and cut east through Zambia to Malawi, head up lake Malawi for a day or 2 and then head home. Or do something like my Zim trip which was only 10 days.

We are so blessed to have so many options, I have done Namibia a few times and it is one hell of a beautiful ride, if you want to swap dessert for palm trees go to Moz  :thumleft: The best way to do it is to just leave.

Just tell your wife it is a mid life crisis and you are embracing it  :laughing4:
