After over 20 years of riding bikes and 4 years of modern bike ownership, I have owned the following:

Yahama XT500
Honda 500R
Yamaha TDR 180
BMW GSA 1200
BMW 800 GS
KTM 990
KTM 950
KTM 690
KTM 300 XCW

I have come to the following conclusion after trying lots of combinations.

Old 1980’s bikes are super cool and fun to own, but not for DS biking

There is no ultimate bike. They are either to heavy, too slow, too uncomfortable or too boring.

If you want to ride dunes, mud, enduro tracks and suchlike, you’ll have a lot more fun on an enduro bike on the weekends etc.

Riding with mates off-road on a trip is always better with a big trailie and a bottle of Jack.

KTM’s beat every other bike hands down, whether enduro or DS.

Jack helps to put all these observations into perspective, hence my fountains of wisdom right this moment.
