A Spin around Wellington/Paarl
« on: January 08, 2011, 09:34:30 pm »
At 6am i met up with Eikeboom at the Total garage in Somerset for a early morning trip to Wellington and surrounds. A nice misty cloud was hanging over us all the way from here into Wellington. After a nice cool ride we were in w/ton and Eike hooked a right just before the Bainskloof turnoff, after leaving the houses and smallholdings we were in the forest area just below Du Toits kloof Pass and travelled through fantastic forest roads zig zagging up the mountain. The next thing we were ontop at the final turn just before the old pass starts making its way down the mountain. What a nice ride with lots of options, Eike found a exhaust valve ontop which he thought is just what the XT needed as it needed a bit more pulling power. We zig zaged down into Paarl for a coffee and a TV bar for breakfast.

After the breakfast of champions we decided to head up to the Taal monument and then follow the road that runs along the side of this granite hill towards w/ton again. Quite a nice ride. Out of w/ton again and on the road towards Tulbagh for about 20 odd kays and then took the soetendal turnoff right towards the mountain. At the Denel factory we turned right and traveled on nice smooth fast gravel with a left and a right here and there back to w/ton. You cant get lost but with Eike's built in gravel compass it just looks so easy.  Arriving in  W/ton, busy with its saturday morning peak traffic we decided to go back over Helshoogte were Eike  had a last surprise for the day. Halfway down h/hoogte we took a left onto a fire break road that climbed up all the way until you can see Stellenbosch from the top as so to speak. Hellshoogte also became a little black line. It was quite a funrun down the hill with one having the choice of right or left back wheel slides as it it was just so steep. About 240kms in a few hours with lots of views and smiles, what a way to start your weekend. Thanks Eikeboom!

Thanks for your nice description of our trip XT JOE. On trips like these (or any outride for that matter) I always wish I had taken more photos, to better share the views and roads and experience. But what the hell, you guys must just come and see for yourselves  :ricky:

While doing the off-road course at Bontebok Ridge, outside Wellington, we did some rides on the roads in the area. I have been to Wellington so many times but never saw it from those "new" angles. Now you have further wet the appetite  :drif:
Thanks for the RR and photos. Its on the bucket list!! :thumleft:
