Het die laaste jaar gesukkel om die tydskrif op die rakke te vind hier in ons valley. Daar is nog steeds 'n mark vir afrikaanse tydskrifte. Almal koop tog seker nie net die forking Huisgenoot nie.

Elk geval, goeie dinge kom en gaan. Dankie aan Jannie Herbst, Johann van Loggerenberg (motofiets ongeluk) en huidige span vir 33 jaar se beste motortydskrif.

Most publishers cannot afford to run 2 similar mags in 2 languages anymore, hopefully Car will let some Afrikaans in from time to time.

Most of the guys were absorbed by other titles are RS&P.

Few are out on their bums on the street. Not nice. I know.  

When it comes to technical, niche publications Afrikaans titles will always struggle. At the cutting edge technology is advancing with such leaps and bounds that one has to spend a lot of time coming up with translations that actually make sense.

"Diffuser"? I came up with "lugsnoer" which, if you know what a diffuser does on a race car, is a sensible translation.

But what about "yaw", "drive-by-wire", "twin-spool turbo", et al?  

Afrikaans people tend to read technical stuff in English. I guess the same would apply to Zulu petrolheads. What is the Zulu for "limited-slip differential"? When we started TopCar we also had TopMotor in paralel. Same content, different language. It didn't fly. Most of our Afrikaans readers bought TopCar. So we discontinued it. Market forces (ie, what people actually want) ultimately dictate these things.

Afrikaans is A1 for lifestyle/travel still.

In Zulu you don't have to make a new word if there is one already from another language ... you just change the pronunciation to make it sound like it's a Zulu word

examples:  watch = iwashi ... kettlle = iketelo ... hour = ihora ... skool = isikole

Dude... that is so complex! We english just add the word as is... boerewors is boerewors, assegaai is assegaai, Zulu is Zulu, vodka is vodka.
