Btw - I don't think BMW will let go of the single swingarm shaft so with that in mind the photos in the article bothers me - there's no 'peep through' hole like in the current shafts - in fact - the rear swingarm looks more Varadero/Caponord...

02/02/12 - RIP Glen - the Arrow of Elliot and the little man with the big heart that truly was larger than life.

You have touched us and left us better for having known you - even if it was only briefly.

For grabbing the moment and living the day It's been way too early that you were taken away

Give it FI and a catalytic converter and it will be just as economic and environmentally friendly as a BMW

So if they make the changes they will be as efficient and green as the boxer ?

If the boxer engine is so crappy and dated as you say, why would you think that other engines should aspire to it ?

There's more to the engine than just being a boxer - it's got a low centre of gravity even though it is heavy.
I agree that due to being air cooled they've pretty much reached the ceiling of what power they can get out of it, so in that case it is kinda end of line.

But according to you that shouldn't be a problem, as you don't need all the power anyway.

;D

BMW has historically led the way with environmentally friendly bikes. The first modern standard FI & catalytic converter bikes were the early K's
BMW later pushed the R oilheads into the same direction.
More and more bike manufacturers follow this trend. Have a look at first world emissions legislation and you'll know why.
It's about lowering the environmental impact not about being like BMW.

And btw the low centre of gravity of the engine is an ancient myth founded by the slalom parcour successes of the Alfasud. It does not apply to a boxer in a motorcycle: Fortunately an Alfasud does not lean too much when cornering which means you can fit the engine just high enough off the ground to prevent the tarmac from ripping off the sump & exhaust manifold.
In a bike you have to move a boxer considerably higher to allow for ground clearance of the cylinder heads when cornering. A parallel twins crankcase can be mounted lower in the frame. At the end of the day I don't think there is a notable difference between the engine COG relative to the ground between a F800GS and a R1200GS.

Apparently not. For the boxer to be Euro compliant in the near future and if BMW want to keep the boxer its the only way to go

Perosnally I think the V twin is the best configuration for a DS bike
