KTM 690 -Fundi's assitance Pls
« on: February 06, 2011, 04:54:28 pm »
Two issues i need help with-

Out ride yesterday , bike kept cutting out , like fuel starvation, thought it might be filter but could not find it, but after taking petrol cap off it seemed to help a bit, think the breather pipe might also me blocked.Did bot slove it completliy.A quick look through the manual could not find the fuel filter, is their one if so where?

Other issue is water , even small crosiings, seem to cut out, where will the water be causing issues, that i can look at.

how deep, or more to the point would be how big of a splash are we talking with these crossings?

The 690 as such isnt all that readily susceptible to issues with water crossings as such. when you say that taking the petrol cap off it "seemed" to help, please elaborate on that for me. If you stop the bike for a few minutes and start it up again does the problem disappear for a few minutes?

What I found with mine is that if you do not wait for the computor thingy to complete it's startup procedure after switching on the ignition, eg immediatly starting the bike after switching the ignition on, the bike do these funny things, misfire, backfire, no power, the standard shaking a tin full of nails sounds ten times worse, engine cutting out etc etc. The 'F' light will also be on.
It is worse than my 800Lewensgevaarlik. The BMW is very forgiving in this regard.

To answer you question this is the water crossing i refer too, that seemed to cause issues, but having said that after washing the bike she starts fine.
The petrol cap issue, is seemed to cut out from 3000 to 4000 rpm, sounds like fuel starvation with a back fire, reminds me to check my airfilter, but once took my cap off and blew through the breather pipe on the cap seemed to improve it by 80%. At one stage after stopping for about 5 min, she would not start, almost ran my battery dead, even tired to run start her no luck, took the cap off, put it on started 1st time??

Had a similar problem: As far as your electrics go. Not long after I got my bike, I pulled every single connector apart, blew it out with high pressure air, and filled it with di-electric grease and then re assembled. Even the ones with O rings in them. If the connector is full of grease, then nothing else can get in. Just wipe off the excess that spoooges out and it won't be a dust collector

check your battery....could be something simple like that ...loose connection or dead battery cell.

Yep

also the stock 690 fuel pump filter has been designed badly, there is a 2x4mm whole that lets any thing past it

from what you have described I would suggest that it is nothing more than a blocked fuel tank breather which will be in the cap . As fuel is pumped to the fueling system the space must be taken up by air if the breather is blocked this will not happen and a low pressure will form in the tank and the pump will not be powerfull enough to over come this so the bike is starved of fuel clean the breather or open the tank and you have atmospheric pressure back and every thing is back to normal .

Agreed, i have blown the cap clean with a air hose at the garage, and i can blow in the breather pipe and it seems to blow freely, i have not had a chance to take it for a long ride since then , so i hope this sorts the problem out.
