Chicago, Washington, New York and other US cities all have their "no go" areas.  That does not make them shitholes.
Some of the Dogs have recommended some good places to vist.  Go and enjoy them.
We don't have the most beautiful places in the world, but we aren't far off.
Enjoy your stay, welcome to SA.

The best thing in Joburg is the departures gate at the airport :pot:

 :imaposer:

That gave me a 'lekker' chuckle.

Also visit Kempton Park and marvel at all the 'suped up' Citi Golf's. Is it still fashionable to have a American bandanna or CD hanging from the rear-view mirror?

It was how I rolled.

i have lived in America, Europe and Asia....i was born in joburg...no one loves joburg like someone who has had a choice...and still chose joburg....

1.Northcliff hill....a path was built on the mountain...walk it at sundown...it is safe and guarded...take a picnic...
2.The westcliff...a hotel on a mountain serving the best High tea in joburg next to the Saxon...in Parkmore.... overlooking the joburg Zoo....(also worth seeing, much better than the zoos in Europe including the famous Berlin Zoo)...i also houses the war museum....a peacefull walk thru the history of war....
3.Go down a goldmine ...2km down a mineshaft...see what made joburg great....
4. row around germiston lake...swans..and chinaman....eat Portuguese food in the area, better than the food in Portugal
5. Hot air balloon in the cradle of humanity....Bill Harpo balloons safari.....and see the wilddogs ride their dirt tracts on the ancient Magalies mountains from your own balloon....
6. Eat real dutch cheese and drink German beer at Van Gaalens cheese factory at Hartebeespoortdam...in the same area...
7. visit the sterkfontein dam...ans see the oldest remains of ancient man ...and the wondercaves....
8. fly fish in the area in the ice cold streams of the sterkfontein fountains....
9 . dive the wondercaves...
10. rhino and lion park in the same area...Kromdraai....
11. visit sun city and the surrounding game reserves....
12. visit Cullinan...and ride the steam trains from this city of diamonds....
13. visit the natural science museum in pretoria  30km from JHB ..amazing , one of the best in the world...Ive been to most....
14. visit the Voortrekker monument...a beacon of the tenacity of the afrikaander....of which i am one....friezes carved by my aunt....
15. visit the Pretoria zoo...one of the best....
15. take the train to magaliesburg...always a winner....
16. we have art museums, craft shops, we have theatere, ballet, opera...
18. we have culture , history and happiness...we are also the largest man made forest in the world...that is my town...
Johannesburg..... i am here because i choose it....

i could go on...joburg and Pretoria has so much to offer....and because we do not have a sea, or large mountains...the friendliness of the people will make you feel warm and welcome....we love visitors in Joburg....and will take you in like long lost family....

you go girl! Also lived for about 5 years in Joburg. Still love the place. It must be the city with the best weather on this planet, Mars as well as Jupiter. True about the friendly people as well.

No one here so far seemed to have mentioned the Apartheidsmuseum (or did I miss it?)  in Gold Reef City - is that not perhaps a "have to visit" place as well?

Anyhow, these days I just choose to live in the Cape.

there are many many more places to visit in joburg...the planetarium being one of them also..it would depend on the visitors interests...the war museum and gardens around is is always such a treat....
joburg is not Capetown...and is not trying to be anything but what it is....it is the largest man made plantation of trees in the world....

Speaking of plantation: around August - Sept all the Jacaranda trees in Pretoria are in bloom - also a sight to behold!

Laurika for Premier!!  :3some:

I'm with you girl. Haven't done the Northcliff walk, though!

Some things to add to the list...

Botanical gardens
Top golf courses, if you play (Pecanwood, Jhb Country club, Bryanston, Royal, Randpark, Serengeti, elements, zebula, Sun city etc.)
Private game farms within 2 hours of Jhb
Melrose arch (cosmo feel)
Some of the top restaurants to be found in and around Jhb (the prime catch gets flown up each morning)
Parkhurst, greenside, melville - all quaint suburban chillout spots (arts, crafts, decor, antiques, coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes)
Montecasino
Design quarter
Bedford Square
Sandton Square

If you do serious off road...
Maraisburg
De Wildt
Snake road

A ride up to Sparkling Waters Hotel near Rustenburg is nice if you go past Buffelspoort Dam
& then do a canopy tour while you are there - very lekker !

Yes on the canopy tour - do engage the guides on the ecology and the history of the area, makes for a great outing!

What is very cool is how you spelled Johannesburg.

'Johanesburg' If said slowly it sounds like "jou anus burg"

And that is how I feel about that  :thumleft:

also been here in Joburg for just over 32 years and busy relocating to western cape. yeah Joburg has plenty of cool place to hang out and places to see, but I've had enough of this place I also feel its a place to work and that's it, every time I land from CPT I get a feeling of I-don't-belong-here-any-more.
My views on everything has changed over the past view months
