Collest things in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Nimibia?
« on: February 25, 2011, 05:01:54 am »
I like to see cool things.

Not necessarily look at pretty buildings, or museums.

But more into things one can experience.  Be it an interesting neighborhood, a cool restaurant, or a mine tour or something like that.

Thinking along these lines, what do you think are the fun and cool things to do in this region?

Of course, I will hit up Victoria Falls and Krueger.  Maybe I will see some of these all-Chinese companies working in Africa that are getting a lot of press and attention.

What would be on your list???

I need suggestions!!!

Kubu or Kukonje island, Makgadigadi pans, Botswana
Zimbabwe ruins - there's a good recent ride report through Zim here
Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon, Swakopmund - all in Namibia

Seriously though - the search function is your friend.  There is a wealth of info right here on all of these countries.  When are you landing?

I've been reading all the different reports here for about a month and a half.  They're all pretty good.

I just wanted to see what you guys think are the highlights.

Do you think that Nimibia is the place to head instead of Mozambique?

I've been catching up with your previous posts, and in that light I would actually say no - I would avoid both and spend as much time as possible riding SA, Zim, Bots and perhaps even Malawi.  The distances out West are just too far, and in Moz, well - to be honest, there isn't a hell of a lot to see - not nearly as much as around SA.

You're clearly hell-bent on Vic Falls, I would just continue on to Lake Malawi, and spend the rest of my time touring Botswana and SA.

There are also one or two things that you need to keep in mind...

* You are not allowed into the majority of game parks on a bike!
* Distances around here are vast, with regular touristy attractions spread pretty far and wide (depending on what you find interesting) - why the bigger bikes are so popular here.
* Check NMEXPAT's ride report, http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=52999.0 - I am sure you'll find the hospitality right here as welcoming and accommodating.  THAT is the best way to see this country (and neighbouring) of ours - have the locals show you around!

Yes, Vic Falls is a must for me.  Aside from that, I don't have a concrete plan.  Is Malawai that nice?

LAKE Malawi is - and it's not too far away.  But, again, for 3 weeks, I would spend about a week finding my feet, travelling though Botswana, 2 days MAX at Vic Falls, 3 days coming back down through Zim, and a week touring SA.

My trip is 4 weeks... I will get my bearings in Joburg, and go from there.

I'm really open to anything and everything.  You know, a standard good fun ride where I get to see a couple of cool things along the way.

I am flying out in 7 hours.

Arriving in Joburg around noon on the 7th, local time.

I will work out the bike stuff, poke around Joburg for a few days to get my bearings, and then off on this ride.

You will meet lots of other WD members which all love adventure riding. The area around Fouriesburg is lovely and a must see anyway. Let me know if you are interested before Friday. You can share my campsite.

Schalk_, thanks!

Fellow dog, Pierre let me know about the bash and it is the #1 reason why I plan to stay in Joburg... so that I can attend and meet some of the local riders.  I still need to give Kurt a call and figure out the logistics... But I hope to be there!

Cool, cu there. If you ever need to come pass Coligny in North West on your way to Botswana, give me a shout for a steak and a bed.
Cheers
