So after all the posts and warnings I saw on the forum I said that I should do these gears on the Dakar as preventative maintenance.

Now yesterday I HAD to do the gears as I was on my way to work when the dreaded temperature warning light attracted my attention.

Buk Maar Weer charged me R1006 for the waterpump kit, the 2 gears and the 2 gaskets needed. Oh and 1 L of antifreeze

The job itself is fairly straight forward, even if you do not cut the oil pipe. The only thing that caught me out was I did not remove the little arm from the clutch that connects to the clutch cable. This prevents the shaft from rotating and then it feels like something is stuck inside. Thanks to advice from Mark Dickinson that was quickly resolved.

So learn from others mistakes, if you 650 GS has more that 50K on the clock and you haven't done the gears, take a day and GO DO IT
