a cold cold ride
« on: May 01, 2007, 02:04:24 pm »
Had a brilliant ride,  made good time and didn't fall once!
Met 2 brothers - brilliant guys from Centurion,  told them about the forum.   Freezing cold.   Wore all my clothes at the same time and still froze!!!   Here are some of the better pics (nokia n73 camera)

Just as the fun starts

It could be worse - in fact shortly it gets so...

cold taken to new levels

The two brothers next to their bikes ('84 model 600cc yamaha)

It was colder than it looks...

I'll do tar exclusively forever more,  if it all looks like this!!!

Went through Golden Gate too,  beautifull...

I waved at every single person I saw,  thinking: if they wave back I can se their hands,  if not they're a potential problem.   I had 2 stones thrown at me.   First one - I had slowed to about 40 when passing them (they didn't wave) and slammed on brakes and the stone flew in front of me.   The second was a very very near miss.   It has never happened to me before,  and was disconcerting to say the least...

1687km and no problems,  just my KLR arse... :D  :D  :D

I prefer to travel alone if I'm going for more than a day.
I hate following a set plan,  and make it up as I go along.
also,  you tend to talk to more people/make more friends when alone.

the route:
day 1: 4ways via n3 to harrismith, then n74 to winterton & r600 to monks cowl (the end of the road)

day 2: monks cowl to winterton then r74 till n3. n3 till Nottingham road ,  then the nice tar / dirt till Himeville,  then up the dirt from winterton to sani border and then up to the top of sani.

day3: sani tiop to mokhotlong,  via the various passes and oxbow to butha-buthe, through caledonspoort ,  clarens (a tourist depot - avoid,  avoid,  avoid),  golden gate to harrismith via r712 and r74.

day 4: harrismith n3 to JHB.   wanted to take another route,  but was just too damn cold.   once on the bike the homing system started working...
