Long Way Down

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman are just days away from embarking on their latest adventure, the Long Way Down.

The pair are planning to go one better than their previous circumnavigation of the globe with a journey from the most northerly point in McGregor?s homeland of Scotland to Cape Town in South Africa.

BMW has confirmed it supplied two standard R1200GS Adventures to the globetrotters two weeks ago. Managing Director of BMW Motorrad UK, Adrian Roderick, said: ?The bikes are totally standard ? we?ve fitted some crash bars and some luggage but other than that they?re the same as you would see in the shops. The boys have had the bikes for two weeks to get used to.?

McGregor and Boorman opted not to fit BMW latest Satellite Navigation systems, preferring the romantic system of maps and stars. The trip to Cape Town is expected to take several months with McGregor promoting his favourite charity UNICEF en route.

The provisional dates for departure from John O? Groats are May 10 or May 12 ? depending on the filming schedule.

Charlie will be riding a 1200 GSA, which is King of the Road, just not built by HD. :D  :D

Two errors in the press report:
1. They are (according to earlier reports) leaving from John 'O Groats which is the furthest point on the UK mainland from Land's End but not the northernmost point.
2. The Long Way Round was not a circumnavigation; they only went about half way round.

I don't want to p*ss on their parade, but on our holiday we bumped into this guy in Robertson, Barrydale and again at the Total garage at Stormsrivier.

This guy rode from Ireland to Capetown.

On his own.

Without backup.

On his (slightly modified) Dakar...

What they did with 'long way round' was epic.
The UK to capetown thing has been done before.

My cousin's best friend took his wife on the back and drove on a GS1150 adventure to the emerates ...

I like the fact that they raise awareness for Unicef tho'...

So, Uiltjie, am I right in assuming that you don't like Charlie? :D  :D

I met this dude at the 2005 GSC, and he seemed quite a good oke. His rendition of the 'Long Way Round' on our last night at the Challenge was extremely funny, he says it as it is, no holds barred, :D Some of the 'verkrampte' okes couldn't believe their ears, :D  :D .
We chatted around the campfire later, and IMO he was 'just one of the guys', no airs and graces. But then again, had he FINISHED the Dakar.......

London to NY the way they did it had also been done before. Many times.
Not many trips that have not been completed out there on a bike.

How you do it, how you market it, thats the key.

Good luck to them on thier African journey, I'll buy the DVD when it comes out.

Charlie is as neurotic as the rest of us.  He is a rich kid but he has done stuff.  I rate him ok.

I loved their sense of humor and their 'realness' on the long way round.

CS - jy gaan baie laat aande hĂ?ÂȘ waar jy te laat gaan slaap omdat jy 'net nog die volgende episode' wil sien.

LWR DVD is baie goed aanmekaar gesit. Selfs Vicky (wat glad nie 'n 'petrolhead' is nie) was mal daaroor.

Ek sou graag meer van Claudio se kommentaar wou hoor tho'.

I assume you've never met him or know him, he did not steal your wife or bullied your kids, why do you then go public and call the guy a d$$s?

I also met Charlie at the Challenge in 2005.  He's just an average nice guy that also likes his Rum and Coke.

Nothing wrong with that.

God luck to them, I think they will have a great trip.

Captain Slow, Eisbein is reg - laatnagte vir jou!  Jy kan dit eenvoudig nie uitlos nie - geniet dit ou maat!

Adv, yes, I have never met Charlie, but I can believe he is not a bad oke, but boy, he was really nasty towards Claudio, who IMO is the biggest hero of the lot!  Being nasty to the guy who was on the biggest afkak, and not getting  enough exposure, isn't good in my book!

Therefore, Charlie stays a d**s until I meet him.

My 2c.

I never wanted to watch LWR because I *thought* it was all BMW and lifestyle, etc. Last week I was given the DVDs and could not stop watching till the end. I really liked it, had a good feeling afterwards.

On a side note, I was impressed by those Russian Kamaz 6x6 trucks! And their drivers, that one guy reversing out of the stream after falling into it.

I'll definitely watch the LWD once it appears.
