Adv, yes, I have never met Charlie, but I can believe he is not a bad oke, but boy, he was really nasty towards Claudio, who IMO is the biggest hero of the lot!  Being nasty to the guy who was on the biggest afkak, and not getting  enough exposure, isn't good in my book!

Therefore, Charlie stays a d**s until I meet him.

My 2c.

Why are you giving me k@k? I never said you were wrong, I merely said that I have met him and thought he was ok!
But inpart you are right, Claudio k@kked off more than both of them, and IMO he did not get enough credit or exposure, guess that's the life of a hired cameraman.
Read the other posts before you rev me.
If you can keep your head in the midst of all this confusion, you don't understand the situation!

It is a pity how we judge people.

I met Charlie and Russ at the GSC '05, both of them decent blokes.
I have watched LWR a million times, read the book, have the coffee table book, etc. Same goes for Race to Daker.

At the end of the day they are celebrities (we put them there) and they are doing something that they love, making good money and helping charity at the same time. They would never be allowed to embark on such a journey without the sponsors, backup, etc because of who they are.

Although this ride has been done before, and many others, there is very little footage of such events available. That is what these trips are about. Giving us that dream a chance to see it (much like the ride reports in this forum)

Look past the lifestyle / celebrity thing and enjoy the trip, alternatively make your own movie so that we can judge you!
I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing!

So, Uiltjie, am I right in assuming that you don't like Charlie? :D  :D

I met this dude at the 2005 GSC, and he seemed quite a good oke. His rendition of the 'Long Way Round' on our last night at the Challenge was extremely funny, he says it as it is, no holds barred, :D Some of the 'verkrampte' okes couldn't believe their ears, :D  :D .
We chatted around the campfire later, and IMO he was 'just one of the guys', no airs and graces. But then again, had he FINISHED the Dakar.......

Can confirm this.

Also at the same GSC, early morning Charlie stood in the Q (om 'n k@k te vat) just in front of me. I had a roll of witgoud with me and he not. When a stall opened he saw that there were no witgoud and offered me the stall. I offered him witgoud, he accepted it. Just then other stall opened and well I must add that I had the "honor" to sh$t next to the man.... :D  :D
Gewoontlik n@@i ek reguit aan op fyndraai.

OK, hands up all of you who have done a trip similar to Long way Round and all of you who have started a Dakar (the race).  And don't come with that bullshit about not having money etc. I believe it is withinin the financial means of most, if not all of you, to do it if you really want to. Sell, the house, get a second bond, flog the car(s), rent out the wife.

Until then, have a bit of respect

:useless:

 :D  :D

I've not seen the DVD or read the book.

Whether I'll like him or not, I'm heavy jealous of him having the time/opportunity to do it. He must have some balls as well. Or maybe a bit crazy. :D

I agree, however I think Claudio is the one with the big cahoonas - not only balancing the beast through the same terrain as E&C but sometimes ahead in order to set up and take the video.  Not to mention his ride on the uncomfortable Red Devil.........

So are we going to revive that thread where the WildDogs wanted to invite them for a trip once they're here?

BMW has confirmed it supplied two standard R1200GS Adventures to the globetrotters two weeks ago.

Only two bikes?
What will Claudio be riding?

I wish the guys the best of luck
It is a trip that I wish I could do right now

I followed LWR and Race to Dakar and found it extremely entertaining.

Although I think Charlie is a bit of a wuss and Ewan cry?s to easily. But hell it was fun watching them!!!
I know a lot people are giving them grief about the whole backup crew issue. But it still takes b@lls to do the ride, even with backup.  I know a lot of people have done it alone; I bet it was out of finance issue?s more than ?I?m too tough for a backup car?. Their famous status is also a problem as much as it is an advantage. People will be looking for them, it will be extremely difficult for them to pass under the radar!
I've been on the Jameson diet for a week, so far I've lost 7 days....

No I like him 2, but he still is a wuss.
Did you watch Race to Dakar. While training he pulled out of a race because he thought he had a fracture. After the doctors examined him they said it was a "blou kol"! Read the book, Race to Dakar. He gets the oppertunity of a live time but all he does is complaint about everything all the time. But it still makes for very enteraining reading!
If I had to choose a team to ride the Dakar I would take him - for comic relief not because he will stick with you to the end. He isn't tough enough. But he is a lekker oke to have a dop with.
