Comment was or is not meant unkind or derogitory, experimenting is good, good ideas are better.

being able to make something much cheaper than being bought is easy.
many of the products sold can be easily obtained from other sources at a fraction of the price.

example power socket and wiring, R250 at places , costs about R50 if you make a effort to buy your own stuff.

to answer first few replies : just because I have 9 comments  on this site, does not mean I have not owned and driven bikes since I am 10 years old and now 40 odd plus a bit, I have just joined this site recently.

Making my own stuff has happened for ages and  the internet and dual purpose bikes are relatively new.

I do have PMS. The weather was shit and I had to baby sit on the weekend.

lastly my partner and I own a auto electricical  and engineering shop, we do most of this for a living.

I need USB chargers on me bike...

There is no better way to put it than that.

I have such respect for the awesome things I see people make. Certain members of this forum have saved me huge amounts of cash by making me stuff I was (foolishly) considering buying. Keep the cash for bike fuel and beers!

I motivate the purchase of tools like this…

If a part costs R1000 from a store and will cost me R200 to manufacture, I’m entitled to R800 worth of tools to produce the part.

In the end I have the part as well as some great tools.  I don’t save on the expense, but gain great tools.

This is explained in the BEST possible way,... EVER!!!

A lot of making things for the maker is the process , there is a joy to be found knowing you are not entirely buying into being a sheep . Sure you can buy things cheaper than making them  but you live once and an important part of living I think is to make yourself something - makes you a better person I think . Yes it may not work but at least you tried to expand your consciousness by manipulating reality around yourself and creating something you can use .

sorry for change of subject midway, but has anybody got experience of Valvoline synthetic chain lube

I have been using the product for long now, a lot cheaper and IMHO works better than Castrol chain wax, esspecially in the dirt, sand/dust doesn't seem to sit on it, when you rinse your bike down after a ride the dirt just comes off and the lube sits..

If everybody just buy off-the-shelf items all the bikes will look the same.  How boring is that.   I would rather make something myself even if it cost me more due to the pure enjoyment I get out of it and the look of my bike is unique.
