Saturday ride rain and shine

SATURDAY morning dawned clear, with blue skies and me wondering whether the weather boffins had again got the forecast wrong.
With this in mind Kaspas and myself met at the 4 way stop outside Wellington headed on the Porcelain road to Riebeek kasteel for breakfast and then depending on the weather to wherever the gravel took us. And on the way we stopped at the Porcelain kiln and met up with a swarm of very busy bees making lots of honey.
But neither of us was brave enough to take off the comb as the bees buzzed around amgrily.
Breakfast at Eds Diner warmed us up especially as in the weather was now cooling considerably and there was plenty of mist on the Kasteel.
Breakfast over we set off to Mooreesburg and then on to Koringberg with the weather still looking good with a few patches of blue sky.
Then on entering the tar heading back towards Mooreesburg we met KTM Donovan stranded with a rear puncture.
He had been with the Mouton van Zyl group headed for the West Coast when he blew a tyre at pretty high speed.
And unfortunately the group he was with left him to his own devices.
The exercise to get him back in action took the best part of 30 minutes, when we parted and headed for a lunch at Mooreesburg at Denzils Pub.
Lunch took time and on leaving the skies suddenly delivered the promised rain.
So the weather prophets were not talking through a hole in their hats.
We rode the gravel to Gouda, rain beating straight into our face and to make matters more interesting the roads department were grading the road. It was fun to say the least riding on a loose and very wet layer of bright red sand.
By the time we reached Gouda it was pelting down and at the turnoff to Zonquas Drift I thought more than twice before taking to the gravel.
It was fun, fairly slippery but nothing we could not handle and at the drift we met up with wiser people than ourselves.
They were in canoes riding the great Berg River and for them the weather was great.
Fortunately the road into Riebeek Kasteel from Zonquas Drift has been patched up and although very wet not bad at all.
Then the real test came as we headed on the Riebeek Kasteel to Malmesbury gravel road.
This in places especially on the ascents was like a skating rink but fortunately we held on and reached Malmesbury still aboard the bikes.
The ride home was fairly dry but the closer we got to cape Town the thicker the mist became.
In the Contermanskloof area the mist was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Thanks to Kaspas it was a another great days riding.
