KTM 500 is it the Ultimate DS Bike
« on: June 28, 2011, 11:04:28 am »
The new 2012 KTM 500 looks to me to be the ultimate DS bike
Lots of grunt ,6 speed,EFI, Light, proper fuel tank

What do you guys think

My Definitions DS = Dual Sport = DRZ400, XR650, KTM525 TE610 KTM 690 etc
Adventure Bikes = KTM 990 BM800 BM 1200 etc

My and your definitions are the other way around.
The 'sport' in your 'Dualsport' is enduro/MX with added road ability.
The 'sport' in my 'Dualsport' is going fast on tar with added offroad ability.
;D ;D ;D

Also - for me 'Adventure bike' is more rough than a 'dualsport'.

;D ;D ;D

Still a nice bike though.

and a bigger tank, 9.5L is a tad small if you would consider using it as a DS.
It's a good enduro machine I would think. Weighs as much as the 450! :thumleft:

Most sites say it will be street legal. In that case it could be near to perfect, except for longer tar  trips. I always said it should just be street legal enough to get you to the dirt.

DS is a unique concept to everyone.

To me, YES the 500exc is the ULTIMATE.
As you know, the clutch comes standard with cush.

And it is road legal. Go look at the 2011 450exc on Ducati/KTM's floor in centurion; indicators as standard.

Everyone longs/drewls at the thought of a 25L tank but it's waaay overkill.
I've been on long rides with 9.5L (1200km) Sidetrack felt kinda silly running that 25L tank on his 525 as its not really required and adds additional weight exactly where it shouldn't.

As for top speed.. it will produce the same topend power as the 525, 160KM on GPS with some.

Also Wolweseun, don't discard the ergonomic difference between this 500 and your group of bikes listed under DS.

My 2009 450 was leaps ahead of my 2006 525. It steered much better and felt much, much smaller.
While the seat is wider and softer  :thumleft:

Also, this 500's motor mos weighs 2.5kg less. It's gonna be a machine!

You ran out of fuel  No I agree 25L is too big, you don't need any bigger than a 15 L.

HaHaHa...I would imagine a +/- 360 km range is the minimum.

Still, the Hoosaberg 570 will be my choice (as if I have the $$$)

:drif: Wow won't mind than berg in my garage! Just look at that frame in yello ! Is that the 2012 berg
because if my memory serves me right it must be black on the 2011. Just wish ktm stuck to the black rims as last year's models they do make the bike look so much better but i do think the silwer one's         won't show marks that fast like the black tend to.Think the new 2012's with the EFI also have to   prove itself in terms of reliability when things get hot for hour's up in the mountans !

Lol sidetrack
Let me put it this way; I would rather push my bike 100m to the nearest fuel station, than ride 500KM with a 25L tank  :)

I was thinking about buying a 570 too.  :drif: :drif: KTM SA sold a 2009 a couple months ago for 35K!

The problem that I found was that it's a bit heavier on fuel than my 450 and aftermarket tanks are insanely expansive  :-\
