All plastic tanks have play. You should check a plastic tank dance when you ride the rough stuff ! Should be better with the placing on 690. Normal don't worry about it.

Thanks sidetack ! The only reason i`m a bit worried  is because the tank/subframe has to carry not only the petrol but my fat ass too,and thats why the play in a tank carrying that wieght worries me a bit. Thanks for your`e input.

I would have a closer look at the coil inserts.

The problem with these bikes is that there is no subframe, and if those inserts gets damaged, you have a pretty big problem. I have read reports before of those inserts pulling loose when the bike is used as an adventure bike and is loaded at the back.

Better check it now before it becomes a problem.

As mentioned above, there have been problems with the upper mounting bolts breaking on some loaded bikes. Best to change the upper bolts with high tensile bolts. Search ADVrider on this.

Wouldn't that just force something else to fail?

No, there is a problem with the way that the upper mounting bolts are machined which creates a weak point where they fracture - i'm no metalurgist, but the bolt is a bit of a fangled thing machined from a thicker bar. This machining apparently changes the hardening characteristics of the larger bar, creating a weak point. It's pretty well documented.

I haven't heard of anyone who has changed these bolts having further problems. The tank is strong - it can carry a pillion!
I've just comeback from a 3400 km trip on mine - i have the touratech pannier racks fitted - with no problems.

Hi PW

I actually did it myself, I took off the exisitng bolts, cut off the bolt portion, drilled  and tapped it - in  effect turning the bolt into a nut if that makes sense. I then bought high tensile cap screws, i screwed the cap screws into the frame from the inside of the frame (the frame has a nut welded on the inside) and then screwed the old Bolt (now a nut) onto the cap screw from the outside - effectively it works as a lock nut as well. Hope this explanation makes sense.

Check this thread on ADVridr - 1359 pages just on  the 690 - http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137643&page=1359

Rally Raid products in the UK also offers a kit for this - plus lots of other ool stuuf for the 690 - http://www.rally-raidproducts.co.uk/store/ktm-690-subframe-tank-mounting-bolts

Cheers
A
