2007 GS Challenge Date Changes
« on: May 17, 2007, 06:09:25 am »
Didn't see this announcement anywhere on the forum that I can remember, but here is the article from the Motorrad newsletter:

The date of the Great African GS Challenge will move one day forward to make better use of the Heritage Day long weekend, BMW Motorrad has announced.

?The Challenge will now start on the evening of Tuesday, 25 September, with Day One route riding on the Wednesday, Day Two on Thursday and Day Three on Friday, 28 September. ? says BMW Motorrad South Africa General Manager Lachlan Harris.

?This means GS riders have the whole of the long weekend to get to the Challenge, and arrive relaxed and rested. It also provides Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September to get home safely for those who have a longer distance to travel.?

* Lachlan also announced the introduction of Orange Routes at the 2007 event, as well as changes to the Skills Challenge to level the playing field.

For more information on these developments, don?t miss the June issue of the printed Freedom newsletter (also available in .pdf format on this website.).

The newsletter is expected at dealers in early June.

This now means that virtually a whole week must be dedicated to the GSC, I don't know, a bit much IMO.
I'm sure some people will welcome this move, but IMO there is a whole lotta better riding that can be done in that week.
But there are a lot of forum members that want to attend this event, so we should take it into consideration when planning the WDYEB (Wild Dog Year End Bash)
If you can keep your head in the midst of all this confusion, you don't understand the situation!

The green routes are of course named after Kawasaki because kawasakis make any terrain look easy.

just got this email from our tjommie deon:

Dear GS Challenge participant

When we announced the date change for the 2007 Challenge earlier this week (see http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.za/bikes/news/default.asp?Id=713), a few e-mails and website discussion forum contributions indicated that the step was not universally popular.

As our intention was (and still is)  to make it easier and much more convenient for all of you to attend the event, we are more than willing to keep to the original dates, would that be the wish of the majority. Keeping in mind that riders from Durban will have to travel 1 500 km this year, and those from Gauteng about 1 200, we invite you to please do the following:

Reply to this e-mail with either YES or NO in the subject line.

YES would mean you support the new dates, which would have the Challenge start on Tuesday 25 September and end on Friday, 26 September, which provide the Heritage Day long weekend to get to the venue, and both the following Saturday and Sunday to get home.

NO would mean that you are against the date change, and would rather have us stick to the original dates and format of a Wednesday to Saturday event - in this case Wednesday 26 to Saturday 29 September.

Thank you very much in advance - and best wishes

Deon Meyer
