Ever wanted to know what the participants of the 2010 International BMW GS Trophy experienced? To negotiate 2,000 km through South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland overchallenging terrain, through beautiful surroundings and on routes that aren’t accessible to the general public.

Well, that’s exactly what you can experience if you sign up for the inaugural 2011 4Stroke Adventure Trophy, a fully-supported independent adventure biking experience with like-minded individuals that follows the exact tyre tracks of the 2010 international event participants – on any make of motorcycle.

Due to the exclusivity of the event and the type of terrain, the event is limited to 70 riders on any make of motorcycle. If you are one of the lucky few adventurers to secure a spot, you will have the chance to experience what some of the best BMW GS riders in the world experienced – without first having had to pass gruelling selection to qualify for one of the elite four-man teams.

Approximately 70% of this almost 2,000 km adventure will be done off-road over seven thrilling riding days, visiting three Southern African countries  whilst experiencing wildlife and tackling some of the most beautiful – and challenging – riding terrain in the world.

The chance has come at last for all makes of motorcycles, especially the KTM boys, to show the BMW crowd a thing or two, or maybe not, nogals on their own turf!

TOUR DETAILS:

Almost the same route will be followed as the 2010 BMW GS Trophy, with a voluntary team-competition element included. These competitions are aimed at having fun and include events such as archery, riding-skills tests, technical-maintenance skills, etc.

You don’t need to be Chuck Norris or an Olympic athlete, as no-one will be expected to do 50 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and run the 2.4km in under 10 minutes. We’d rather see the average adventure rider (distinguished, adventurous gentlemen who appreciate the finer things, but who has nothing to prove) participate in this fun-filled adventure.

Having said this, it doesn’t mean that the competition will be boring to those who want to pitch their skills against fellow riders. The voluntary competition element will give participants the chance to win fantastic prizes and the honour of being part of the team that walks away with the “winning” trophy.

As the 2010 BMW GS Trophy organiser and BMW Motorrad Germany Chief Instructor Tomm Wolf remarked on the route prior to the 2010 event:”We will be travelling 2,000 km in extremely different styles of landscape – we’ll experience mountains, forests and great enduro landscapes in Swaziland, while in Mozambique, it will be sand all the way.”

Tomm continues: “Along the way, you will be passing through amazing landscapes, crossing rivers, muddy sections and sand, in very high temperatures and high humidity.” He also added that anyone lucky enough to experience this terrain will treasure these memories forever.

The legendary Jan “Staal” du Toit, head of Country Trax Off-Road Training academy – the people who recce’d the original route, and who hosted and ran the logistics of the 2010 BMW GS Trophy – will once again lend a helping hand to make sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible. Jan has also secured exclusive rights of use of some parts of the route. These routes are not accessible to the public, thus making this event a unique and exclusive experience.

To make things easier for participants, riders will have the option of having their luggage transported for them. This will not be held against them and no-one will be branded as a “sissy”! This service obviously excludes your favourite Weber braai, “skelmpie” and two crates of beer (although we might help you with a six-pack or two).

The same paramedics, who supplied the back-up at the 2010 GS Trophy, will provide their excellent back-up, along with a group of 4x4 vehicles and trailers (in case you have a “side-stand incident”) and Country Trax marshals on bikes.

This will be a truly amazing experience to meet people from different backgrounds who all share a love for their adventure bikes. To be able to ride these wonderful bikes in such terrain with like-minded people is a truly unique opportunity.

COMPETITION FORMAT:

Participation in the competitions isn’t compulsory, but it promises to be loads of fun with great prizes to be won. The different competition tasks have been designed not to favour only the very skilled riders. Therefore, some riders might do well at certain events, but struggle to hold a candle to the “beefier” guys during the tyre-throwing competition!

A minimum of two riders per team are required to enter the competition. Riders will travel on their own or in small groups with the routes loaded on their GPS’s, where the participants will encounter various special stages where they not only have to demonstrate their riding skills, but also their navigation skills and technical knowledge. Some teams will obviously have a healthy rivalry, but ultimately all teams will assist one another to reach each day’s destination. Well maybe the KTM riders are on their own!

Points will be calculated every night and the winners of each day announced after dinner.
