690 - motorrad magazine 50,000km test
« on: July 12, 2011, 06:19:54 pm »
The German motorrad mag have done the strip down of their long term 690sm
overall very good
some pitting on 4 and 6th gears
some small scores on the bore (ktm say prob from dirt getting in at a sevice)
exhaust valves a little burnt (could be lapped in)
a little wear on the slipper clutch ramps
the bike lost a bit of compression and 2hp over the test
about 500 euros work and it would be good for another 50,000km
they also had a wiring loom replaced due to corrosion
new 690 from 2010 will have a better loom and 10,000km services

That has electrical problem written all over it.  ::)
Did you check this:?
Check the wiring going to the coil as well, wires seem to go loose at the connectors on the coil.  Already happened to three of my 690 friends.

Too late I already sold the bike, and good riddance.

The other thing I hated about the bike was the fueling; I got mine with a full Leo Vince system fitted with Acropovic mapping installed, which was supposed to be correct for that system. We never got it run right, and my relationship with KTM CT soured as a result.

My 690SM was the first generation so maybe they have sorted the fueling out on the newer ones.

I have a feeling that KTM got the 690SM fundamentally wrong and that is probably the reason they pulled it from the range after only two years.

Oh well thats a bummer  :-\
Maybe KTM CT didn't have the needed experience, seeing as the bike was 1st gen

I've seen a couple 690 enduro's running leo Vince's with no hassles.

I see myself owning a pimped 690R for sure  :drif:

My 2009 690R het nou 20 000km op en ek service hom elke 5000km self. Nog GEEN probleme van geen aard nie.
My gemiddelde petrolverbruik is tussen 16 en 18 km per liter. Glo my, ek gebruik die bike! Al 2 off-road races met
hom gery. My eerste 3 dienste was by KTM Cape Town, hulle ken die bikes en weet hoe om dit te hanteer, dus geen
probleme.

Like I said I do not think the 690SM was KTM's best, but at least it sorted the teething problems for the later 690's.
