OUTENIQUA PASS Closed...?
« on: August 03, 2011, 01:27:14 pm »
I have just heard that the Outeniqua Mountain Pass is closed between Oudtshoorn and George, for a month or more, because of Rock falls.

Is this possible..? Anybody have any more input about that please.

To get from George or Garden Route N2 into the Oudtshoorn Region is Robinson Pass the only alternative now?

If so, that is quite a detour and is that tract of road going to be able to handle the increase in traffic.?

Not looking forward to this...?

It is actually not the  Outeniqua pass that is closed.  It is about 10km from Oudtshoorn where the roads passes through a cutting (reddish rock/ground on the sides) where it is closed.  If you want to do the minimum dirt and you come from George you turn off the gravel road in the Zebra area, think board says Heimersrivier, then you turn left at the intersection on the northern side of Perdepoort, follow it to the Y, take left and come out past Proefplaas at garage on southern side of Oudtshoorn.  If you are coming from Meiringspoort to George it is worthwhile turning off at Dysselsdorp already. Google maps will explain it better.  If you come from Gauteng to George or vice versa, come via Graaf Reinet, Uniondale and you will not know about problem.

exactly like Hagar said.  :thumleft:   not the outiniqua pass  but the N12 just outside Oudshoorn.

The gravel detour through Heimesrivier is basically gravel highway.  no problems to do it with a sedan and a very nice alternative to the tar when riding, in fact, if your riding -  skip tar completely all the way from George to Ouds by doing the Montagu pass, through perdepoort, and then past Heimesrivier.

Heimesrivier is closed to heavy traffic though

I rode past it on Sunday. HUGE boulders in the road. Can't think it will take a month to fix though? Some bulldozers and it's out the way in a day? Unless the whole area is unstable now?

yup.    wont take that long to clear the road, but they are indeed worried that the whole area has become unstable and unsafe.

They will probably have to fix the unstable areas (like they did with Kaaimans pass) before the road can be safe and opened again
