I thought I would share the pannier frame project I've been busy with recently.

I needed a simple solution to secure my Oxford soft luggage to the bike.  Bought luggage racks was not a option as they are far to expensive, so I went the el-cheapo route.  I started off by having a rear aluminium luggage rack (450mm (W) by 350mm (L) by 6mm thick) waterjet cut for me.  It cost R300.  I then made two frames using 16mm by 16mm square tubing and had it powder coated.  That was about R250 for material and powder coating.  I also had 30mm loops welded onto the brackets to use with the lock straps for the Oxford bags.  There is a cross bar between the brackets for support.

I tried it out and it is very sturdy and secure.  The Oxford bags are are also strapped to the frames using cam-buckle type straps that I got from Builders Warehouse.  The Oxford bags are very secure and do not sag or shift around.  I'm quite chuffed with the end result.  I still want to powder coat the rear ali. rack black.  I must acknowlege "AdventureMx" for the original idea.  It just shows that you don't have to spend a fortune on a luggage solution for the KLE.

Let me know what you think.  See pics attached.
