XT 500 rebuild spray or powdercoat
« on: August 22, 2011, 01:31:07 am »
I have got my 1981 XT 500 G down to the frame. i want to rebuild it right (not doing the mechanical graft myself). What are the main advantages of respray over powder coating. The garage that's doing it for me has said that if it is re-sprayed and there are chips i want to touch up in the future, it will be easier done if it is sprayed ... powder coating seems the more hardy option to me. Lets take the cost of the 2 options out of the equation. Some thoughts please

Powder coat is harder, longer wearing and less likely to chip.
Paint is easier to "touch up" when required.
Whenever possible I go with powder coat..

Some proper 2K should be almost as hard I would think and doesn't chip as easily.

This was about 8 years ago. She got me up the Sani pass and home once and then the next time i didn't have a passport to go up again (silly me). Broke down just short of home. Not actually broke down - more a stripped gear selector we think . Left it alone for years (subsequently my wife's dear friend had died on an XT in Cape Town and that didn't fill me with the desire to get mine running asap.

Now it is time and i am going to enjoy it more than before.

Powdercoat every time - the finish is awesome....
I did an XT last year - had the powdercoating done at J G Powdercoaters in Boksburg North - excellent job - cost about R1350 from memory - but i did everything that could be coated, including the back mudguard....

If you re keeping the bike as a show piece then powder is the way to go, if you are planning any off road riding or bashing about then stay with 2k, as mentioned easy to repair without the big strip down.

It is basically what is used to paint vehicles with. A 2 part paint that contains a hardner.

I think it is gonna be powder coating then. Quite a few folk have mentioned JG . Going to take the frame , kickstand, crash bars and exhaust. It is a pity i have been prepping the frame for painting before thinking this through. A wasted 4 hours. Anyway . Any suggestions for an awesome "chromer" (one which chromes) ?

Don't forget to take the steering head and all those little-bitty brackets that hold the engine in - and what aboutthe gauge housings (if you are planning to strip them) - and that dodgy bracket that holds the rear brake hub (I forgot that and had to take it later) Send everything you can - seriously worth the effort - Look!

Aahh, the only other XT i have seen with a grab rail at the back , i have trawled thousands of photos and not seen a single other with it , i thought it might have been custom made, what year is yours ? Seeing that i am not personally putting the bike together the mech is gonna sort every little bit that needs to be coated. Weird thing, i thought powder coating was only black , but the mud guard - a crisp white - nice.
Yours started its life with you a little rougher than mine. Mine just started wasting away under a perishing car cover, under a car port for 8 years . The elements did enough damage like that to let me know that that is why i am aging so fast under this African sun !

Powder is available in many colours, and you can have it in gloss or semi matt too.

JG can do a whole range of colours - even metalic - don't scared off by the factory tho - it is an extremely dusty business!

I actually have 2 XT's at the moment - one belongs to Roadcat, a 1980model (also WD), it is his that I rebuilt. My rebuild of my 1981 will probably begin next year, but I am undecided as to whether I want to do an original rebuild, or a conversion to a Dakar model. I have all the original bits and a load of aftermarket stuff as well, so I can go in either direction. I may even look for another XT to do the Dakar conversion on!

Here's a pic of Roadcats finished bike - the chain is not on yet and the spokes need to be replaced still - I will get the hubs powdercoated at that point!

I also have an old XT500 and was thinking the same...
Either 100% original (nice but a bit boring)
Or a "vintage motocross" or "Dakar" or even supermoto conversion. All very cool!

I have thought of the SM option as well - I would like to do one, but first either an original (yes, boring!) or the Dakar. Original would be a sentimental build as I have had the bike for nearly 20 years - the Dakar build would just be for lekker!!
My XT has the same tank as the black one below, bit in white - it's actually a modified XT550 tank - but I still have an original tank as well.

And apologies for hijacking the thread somewhat tikkeltokkel!!!

In fact, I just found a concept drawing I did for the Dakar type conversion that I was thinking off - I actually still want to use the bike to tour with, so I need panniers or something....

The Sani pass in July says wind protection is needed at any speed .

As you can see from the pics Turtle did a brilliant job restoring my bike after 10 years of neglect and sitting outside. He even drove all the way to Cape Town with a trailer on the back of his car specifically to pic her up! Absolute legend status.

Various bits had been stolen off her during her years of neglect, fortunately there's a pretty good market of XT spares here in Europe, so I managed to source most parts and kept on sending him "spares packages" (similar to the care packages I got in the army, but stuffed with motorbike parts instead of Ultramel!)

The saddle was an extremely lucky buy of off eBay because they sell for stupid money but I still haven't managed to find an origional bash-plate at an affordable price. There's an alli one available from Germany for under 100 but it's not nearly as beefy as the origional (I'm almost certain mine ended up being flogged for scrap  >:( )

Hopefully one of these days he'll post a build report on the forum complete with all the pics he took whilst restoring her.

I don't like morning people... in fact I don't like mornings, or people!
