Quirky / Interesting attractions / monuments
« on: August 24, 2011, 03:20:50 pm »
We are thinking of visiting all kinds of interesting and/or quirky attractions or monuments in SA. Ones we can think of, are the Koeksister monument in Orania, the big pineapple in Bathurst, big post box in Calvinia, etc. Do you have any to add to the list?

1. Koeksister monument in Orania
2. Big pineapple in Bathurst
3. Big post box in Calvinia
4. Tree bar in big baobab in Tzaneen

The Boabab toilet in Katima?

Is that a specific one? Most of the hollow baobabs are used as toilets. Yuk.

The Boabab toilet in Katima?

I seem to recall that one from when I was there in '77, it's a toilet complete with cistern, etc. If I remember correctly it faced out over toward Zambia?

Only monuments?
What about the deserted Daviesville Trading Store just north of Tzaneen?

The heading says "quirky/interesting", not "obscure"!

Speaking of which, some years ago on my way to Giyani I passed (somewhere to Duiwelskloof, IIRC) a delapidated farm shop which had a sign saying something like B.E. VOKTE WINKEL.  At the time I thought that was as unfortunate as the shop close to the Tanzania/Kenya border which advertised itself as "Borderline Enterprises"...
