Day 3
When I first started planning this trip, the idea was always to not over organise the trip.  I never booked accomodation in advance, and I only had a rough idea of the route I wanted to take.

Today was one of those days where the beauty of one section of the route held us back so much that we had to cut out another section.  But there is always next time...

It got to -2 degrees last night

Sunrising over Duck and Dive

Just over the first hill, the day promises to have plenty of beauty to show us.

Jy vat hierie pad...

The road I chose to take was the one running south of the normal Loxton – Frasersburg route.  I am so glad I did, because it takes me through farms (with a couple of gates),  and the road is obviously not used often.

Note the grass growing in the “middelmannetjie”   Baie lekker route.

More

As a kid, I used to “trek draad” on our farm as well, and this “corner post” fascinates me.  It is called a “drop anker”  Named after the twisted wires pulling to corner upright anchored to a rock on the ground.  i.e dropping.  But to get a rock like that over here??  WTF?

How much flippen water is underground here?  Can you spot all 7 windmills?  There was another 3 on the other side of the road as well

A little later down the road, Nog pompers.  And windpowered generator.  These normally only generate 12v.

I must’ve hit a hobbel at a moerse speed to crack my bashplate like that.  That is 6mm Aluminium.  Geez.  I need a new bolt too.

My hart kom affie plaas, Waar die Wind en die Son en die Stilte my speelmaats was.

And then all of a sudden I run out of fuel.  Since I have put the GSA tank on the GS the fuel gauge has not been working.  I have conservatively calculated at 15km/l.  I got 16.7km/l up until now.  According to the mileage done, I should at least get another 100km on the tank.  Now what?

Domkrag.  I tip the bike to it’s side and hold it a few centimeters above ground as to not scratch the new crashbars.  I can here the fuel flowing over from one side to the other.

Daarsy.  Nou kan ons weer ry.

We fill up with petrol at the only pump in Frasersburg and head out to Sutherland.  The locals advise us that the Sutherland – Frasersburg roads are normally quite busy, and to top it all off, roadworks have started on the main road as well.

Luckilly my GPS shows we are taking the “Posroete”  (postal route)  Lekker!  It’s 30km longer than the main gravel road.  So why not.  Let’s go have a look. You can see Justin in the background facing the main road.

The water here is crystal clear.  While I take this photo, Justin plunges into the stream next to me, spraying a wave of water over me, my bike and my camera.

WTF Justin.  See him laughing.   He couldn’t brake in time and swerved and hit the water at speed.

Check daai briekmerke.  Hahaha!

The farms we pass here are all aptly named after stones.  Klipheuwel.  Kliplaagte.  Kliprand.  And so forth...

Justin’s new boots fails the water test.  He is standing in water, in his shoes.

Imagine living here.  Aaaah Eendag as Malema sy kak los, koop ek weer grond.

Die Posroete does not dissapoint.  Around every corner is the most beautifull roads and a perfect day.  Every few minutes we stop and take a few photos.

Justin passing the Windmill and the old Corbelled house.  These houses are packed with stone in an intricate manner so that the stones forms the roof as well.  Fokken Genius Pappa.  Voortrekkers made do with what they had available.  Stones.

Waiting for the boss.  I like the square stone garden path.  Must’ve been quite a mix and match to build these structures and paths and kraal.

Round the house

Note on the left above my bike where the reeds are.  That is how the water was flowing through here after all the rains recently.

So wyd soes die Jirre se Gendade!  Bliksem. All this level with water!  And there are quite a number of farms in between the “stroompies”   I am sure a lot of people were cut off from the rest of the world for weeks during the rainy season.

Here is  where I almost saw my arse trying to open throttle in the water.  The cement bed is quite snotty with moss.  Nog ‘n briekmerk.

Sout van die aarde.  We meet this Father and son busy hunting Jackals.
A way of life in the Karoo.  We stop to have a chat to them.  Man what a pleasure!  Here are some of the things he had to say:

Ek was nog nooit uit die Karoo eens gewees nie.  My swaer was al tot bo in Pretoria saam my pa een keer.  Hulle s’e daar is fokkol beskawing daar bo nie.

Nou hoe so oom?

....pauses..... Wel, daar is nie eens ‘n windpomp in sig van na die Oranje rivier nie.

Die fokken jakkalse eet my skape op, drol en al.

Nou wavver bike is die vinnigste. (he peeps at my clocks and then at Justin’s. 1200GS marked to 220km/h.  800GS marked to 240km/h)  Nou dis die seker lat jy (pointing at me) moet voor ry.  Hy gee jou die headstart.

Die stootskraper het in Januarie hierbo vasgesit (I actually did see the spot where it got stuck) Tot nou toe is die donners te bang om terug te kom om klaar te kom skraap.  Seker oorlat ek hulle so vinnig daar uitgesleep het met die Massey Ferguson (Apperently the grader got unstuck with quite a jerk, after he opened throttle on his tractor)

More water crossings testing Justin’s Boot’s Waterproofing.

Rhenoster Valley Guest house.  Got to book in advance, but man, what a spot to bring the family.

More scenic roads.

Some artistic entrance to a farm.  Solid steel on them old cars.

Another pretty stream.

Justin drying his socks and boots again.

Can you spot the Sutherland telescope?

More and more blommetjies along the way.

Sutherland.  At least today is a little warmer than normal.

We have bite here.  Owner is also a biker and very friendly.  Food is great and beer is cold.

Justin puts Shoprite bags over his feet to keep water out.  It works.  Kind off.

After Sutherland, we decide to skip Moordenaars Karoo.  I would like to do Tankwa and Gannaga Pass instead.

On our way to Tankwa Karoo National Park.

More evidence of the rain that fell here.  Don’t want to hit that at speed!

The road keeps running next to this river.  Around every corner the twists and turns astound me.  And it’s lush and green after all the rain.

Not long, and we get the turnoff.  I am quite excited about this one.  Seems somebody else has been here too.

The road to the top is not difficult at all, and the view from the top is Whoa!

The wind is blowing like crazy.

What a view.

The roads down the pass are steep and cuts back on itself a couple of times.

Did I say steep?  I park my bike into a rock.

Some more photos

Here we are at the bottom and it’s vygies every where.

At the bottom of Ouberg the roads level out again, and we can “gooi” a bit more.

But I constantly have to stop for the scenery.  Lekker.

Arty Photo, or at least I tried.

And here we are  mid afternoon allready.

Karoo Table Mountain.

Got to choose your line carefully here.  Landing in the left lane can seriously damage your health.

We arrive at the Tankwa Karoo Office.  We won't be able to make it over Gannaga Pass before nightfall.  We will have to do it tomorrow morning.

En nou, Watter kant toe nou.  We chose to camp at Langkloof Camping spot.  They are still building the ablutions, but it’s cheap and we are a GO!  16km to dubbel brandewyn en Coke.

Some washed away sections where we have to take it easy.

Landscape changes again, and the sun is slowly setting on a very lekker day.

The manager at the office warned us about a hectic river crossing.  This was it.  Couple of lekker suprise holes and then slippery rocks but nothing too serious.

Through on the other side.

Waiting for Justin

So I wait a few minutes, but Justin doesn’t show.  O fok.  :o  I turn the bike around and back over the river crossing.  About 3 km down I find Justin had a front wheel wipe out after he misjudged a double S- curve.  He had a solid side neerslet on his left and his ribs are very sore.  When I come around the corner, I was so worried, but I see him standing and sigh of relief.

Bly ek het nie my kamera by gehad vir die impak slag nie.

Damage.  This bike is now called Anderman-se-vrou-koekeloerder.

We make our way back to the watercrossing and I guide Justin through.  I am quite concerned about his ribs being broken or cracked.  Pain normally tends to set in two to three days later.

We get to the camping spot and I start pitching the tents and make a fire.  Then coffee.  Justin has gone to the next door campers and asked them to braai our wors for us.  I make the fire inside an old room in a derelict house to block it away from the wind.  Later that night the wind picks up and starts swirling the smoke around.  Shit.  Backfired plan.

The roof, The roof, The roof is on fire!

Tents set up.  Quick and without hassle.

We park the bikes back to back to block the wind off a bit.  Not that it helped  much.

Justin is off to bed early and I sit and dop on my own like an alcoholic until the wind starts to blow smoke in my eyes.

By the time I go to bed, it starts to drizzle slightly.  :o

Distance for the day:   398km

Total so far. 1605km.
