Yea but good things take time, and you do a brilliant report, so we will give you a little while longer before we start demanding the next instalment  :thumleft:

Day 5.

Early morning we are up again.  Lekker warm bed.  Lekker vroeg gaan slaap.  Great.  Today we gonna ride them bikes hard and far.

The breakfast again blows my hair back.

Wallas die hotel-Wrak van Wrandvlei!  This dog slept in the reception area.

Packed, Loaded and ready to roll.

One of the local laaities wanted a photo so I obliged.  He went ballistic pushing all the buttons and what not.  Amper ge-snotklap.

In Brandvlei, the take care of the dogs.  They really did.

The brandvlei church.  It’s beauty is almost out of place for the little one horse town.

We leave Brandvlei full of anticipation for Verneuk Pan.  The roads are in great condition and we make great time.

Two roads diverged in the Karoo, and I took the one less travelled by.

The GS is the undisputed king on these kind of roads.  I won’t mention my topspeed on this stretch of road.

I even let Justin lead for a bit.  He has gained confidence and I find it harder to leave him behind for longer than 30seconds.

Another split, and we head north to Swartkop

The road to swartkop is beautiful, flat and spectacular landscape next to the road.  Even the wild animals stop and stare at us.

I know I am still in Civilisation, cause “daars ‘n windpomp”.

I try to imagine what it must look like when these boulders come rolling towards you and stop short like this one did.

Other side of the road.  Seems God lost his marbles here when he built the Northern Cape.Note the sinkplaat.

A very nasty ditch in the road.  Luckilly I slow down to 40km/hour.

Seems like a GS panel lying in the road just after the ditch.

Swartkops Cash store....Is closed.  Het okkie petrollie.  This old fuel pump reminds me of the fuelpump we had on the farm many years ago.

We went through several gates.  Apparently the sheep are somewhere too.

Justin having a look at Verneuk pan.

Me having a look.

This gate latch fascinates me.  I’ve built and repaired plenty of gates on the farm when I grew up.  With bike gloves it’s quite tricky to open and close.

Like I mentioned earlier, I did quite a bit of “draadtrek” myself as a youngster.  Especially when we enclosed our farm to become a  Game farm.  However that was across mountains, ravines and bushveld.  Draadtrekkers are paid per pole/dropper and down anker, each at it’s own rate.  This job has to be a sure money maker.

The main gate is locked. And we cant go further.  However the name Verneuk Pan is justified when Justin exclaimed:  We won’t be able to ride there any way.  It’s all under water.  (Bear in mind his fear of mud and water from yesterday.)

We take a ride around the 5kms or so plains next to the fence.   Justin gets to see for himself that the water illusion is created by these black rocks on the surface.

One of my favourite pics of the trip.

Souskluitjie pad.  The bikes’ tracks are hardly visible on the surface.

After fooling around on the pan, We head further north and make way towards Kenhard

The road to Kenhardt is a little rougher than the gravel highways we took coming into the pan.  Lots of ruts across the road, heavy corrugation and a spot or two of heavy sand.

Plus we have to stop all the time to open and close the gates, for sheep that is nowhere to be seen.

Gates and more sukkling with the catches.

Justin heading up the rear again.  His sore ribs are now seriously taking a beating.

Eventually we get better gravel roads again.  We are heading toward the R27 Tar road.  Lunch is calling.

Every now and  again, I pass a Kokerboom.  I stop at this nice specimen to get a photo.  Later I would pass one twice it's size.

Daarie kantoe!!

Gekke en dwase...

And then boring old black stuff again.  But Justin is relieved.  He is in a lot of pain.Note the bird squattercamp on the telephone poles

Kenhardt.  About 80kms south of Keimoes. Filling up.

After Filling up we have a pie, chips and coke here.

The farmstall does not disapoint.  Lots of things to see and very very good food.  Friendly people and accomodation available too.

At the farmstall,  We see couple of interesting things.

A KTM

A Husky

A Girlfriend for Carrots

Some genuine quality appliances.  This is a MIELLE!! Washingmashine.

As we undress the Atgatt, a friendly local oom appears.  He is a biker too, he says. He heard the bikes roar and had to come and have a look at who is here.

What bike, Oom?

Yamaha XT 660l

Lekker Oom.  Do you know 2StrokeDan?

Wie's dit?

God's Gift to Yamaha, Oom.

Hy's 'n rumour.

I nearly piss myself at his reply.   >:D

Justin is in a lot of discomfort, and wants to stick to tar roads.  Unfortunately the only tar roads are either north to Keimoes, or south to Brandvlei.

So we ask around, and they assure Justin that the Putsonderwater road is in good condition at the moment.

I phone ETS, and it is a done deal.  Destination Prieska.

Kenhardt

Quite a little interesting place, Kenhardt.  First thing I noticed is the Palm Trees, and the heat.  Gives the whole town a bit of an Oasis feel to it.  Kenhart was the most isolated police, administrative and magistarial (sic?) headquarters during the Koranna rebelions post 1870.

Some photos

Palm Trees, Freshly painted houses, and dusty roads

Kokerbome on Main road.  Ironically the church and police station are on opposite sides of the street

Some more useless info.
THere is a kokerboom forest 8km outside of Kenhardt.  we passed it on the way in.  Over 5000 trees.   :o  Worth a visit

There is a Camelthorn tree still in town.  Guessed at 500-600 years old, and still alive. The town of Kenhardt was started under this tree.

Justin and I decide to split up.  Justin want's to take a short cut directly to Prieska, and I want to go to Prieska via Van Wyksvlei.  Justin will be going via Putsonderwater, and meet up with ETS in Prieska.

Just outside of Kenhard, is the Rooibergdam.  Built for irrigation purposes for the farmers.  Just to the right of this photo

The gravel road to Van  Wyksvlei is long and straight.  About 160km of pure bliss again.

Boer Maak 'n plan.  This farmer used the Tolbos, and Kakiebos, and built this structure with Poles and wire across.  Then all the bushes are simply chucked on top, and the thorns intertwine themselves to form a shade port for his sheep.  NOt a tree in site. Fokken Genius Kwagga.

These roads are more fun than what should be legal....

Prieska left, Van Wyksvlei Regs.

I filled up my Camelbak in Van wyksvlei and then shoot straight through to Prieska.  I havent heard from Justin yet, and I get worried.  He should've made it to Prieska allready.

The gravel roads to Prieska are in very good condition too.

And suprise suprise, I get tar about 60km out of Prieska.  I stop to take a photo, and Justin's Sms comes through. He is safe in Prieska.   :thumleft:

Moerse Bird squatter Camps

I get to Prieska and decide to ride around before phoning ETS.  Town is quite a easy layout and I find ETS on the golf course while I am still riding around.  Co incidence.

Prieska Kerk

The Legendary ETS, man with a big heart and bigger.......MX Boots

Seperated at birth?  They differ one year in age.

Reminds me of these two

The rest of the day, we spend in ETS and his lovely wife's company.

He had a golf day and we are invited to join them for the braai and a few lekker beers at the local golf Club bar.

We eat drink and laugh, till late, and then it's off to ETS's house where we sit up and chat about bikes and trips untill way past midnight.

When my head touches the pillow, I'm gone immediatly

TX ETS!!!!

Distance for the day:  500km

Total Distance:  2406km

So that is probably where ETS was when we passed through there - on the golf course.

Lekker report, enjoying it  :thumleft:
