YAMAHA XT RALLY 2011
« on: September 19, 2011, 10:39:10 am »
I'll get this thread started!

While I'm waiting for my pics to upload, Adrian (Half-Bac) and Yamaha made this an event to remember!  For the small amount we paid, we got way more than we bargained for!  My expectations were exceded on every level!   :drif:

The riding was absolutely AWESOME and the people were amazing!

About ten Wilddogs made it to this event, so guys, pics please!   O0  I'll post as soon as possible!   :ricky:

What a truly amazing 4 days!!!!!

Paid R900 for the 4 days of food and fun and came home with about R1200 worth of goodies   :thumleft:

The riding was tough but HUGE HUGE fun, You know when Jan "Staal" du Toit takes you on a RED route you are in for a good day!

Amazing to see so many riders on a RED route, Jan expected about 6, We were about 26 bikes, 4 or 5 on ST1200's, 2 with pillions  :o Hats off to you guys and ladies!!!

Jan even tried to cull our numbers early with a rather insane ride through his forest section, and the look on his face when not 1 dropped out was great!
He later told me that Yamaha riders are on another level!!!

I managed a spectacular high speed mid air jump into a 2m deep ditch and ended up launched over the handle bars and due to luck (mine) and awesomeness (my Tenere) there was no damage at all! much to the amazement of all!

the Adventure route on day 2 was just as lekker but thankfully a lot more relaxed ;-) as the body was still recovering!

The Skills challenge on Saturday afternoon was crazy but great fun! Jan out did himself on this one, and was great at helping out with tips and techniques to complete each exercise.

Ill post some video clips soon,

To Yamaha and all others involved Thanks so so much. was one of the best events I have had the pleasure of joining, everything went of like clock work!

Thanks to Jan for the venue the advice and the wonderfull laughs! Ill be your "agterwiel" anytime ;-)

Thursday morning bright and early we departed and met up with corne at Heidelburg!  The dumbass lost his toolbag and handguard somewhere in a 30km stretch, so he said he'd catch up at Val for lunch!

Lunch time at Val was me, Jules, WimC and Rockenz. We wondered where Corne had got to - flat tyre with help on the way from Heidelburg because he had no patch kit or tube - why he didn't call us is a mystery!   :patch:

Had an awesome chow, then off to Amersfoort!  The road there was fantastic dirt highways, nothing too challenging, but awesome none-the-less!

Then we came across Adventurer chilling on the side of the road next to his SuperTen!  Why...a huge gat in the back tyre!  :xxbah:

We sat with him for a while until help came.... he pulled a Stoetbul and got a lift to the event!

We arrived in Amersfoort, filled up, then off to Country Trax where the Rally was being held!

We were met with a very welcoming crowd, and XTFreak was so happy that he had made it first - it doesn't count man, you did tar!
:peepwall:

We set up camp and wondered where the hell Corne was!  Way past dark, he arrived, happy to be there finally!

That night we had a killer chow around the camp fire and a decision had to be made whether to do the red or green routes - red = technical, green = adventure!

The view from the camp site!

Myself, Corne, Jules, XTFreak (and his spooning buddy Rob), Kallie, Francois and Grim opted for red and WimC, Rockenz, Adventurer, Half-Bac (who led the ride), Dilligaf and Enduro (I hope I didn't forget anyone) did the green!

XTFreak and Rob... (these two guys are HILARIOUS!!!)   :imaposer:

Robocop and half robocop

THE RED ROUTE>>>>

Well, all I have to say about this route is that was probably the most fun I have ever had on two wheels!  Jan and Louwrens Mahoney led this route, and boy did we ride!

There were a few sections that necessitated okes climbing off their bikes and pulling each other through!  Who would've thunk that 160kms could take 7hrs and you could be that tired at the end!

Some pics....

Hang on, I'm gonna try this again!  Image shack is failing me!   :lamer:

Lotsa riders doing Red

Racing through the canals

The next day we did an Adventure ride.... I wouldn't be able to tell you where exactly, but it was fun with a lekker section next to the train tracks and the train tunnel (which we missed), some awesome rocks and then just chill!  It was thankfully way less hectic than the day before!

We stopped and had lunch at the Mucky Duck in Wakkerstroom

And then it was back to camp for the skills challenge...

Louwrens Mahoney showing us how it's done

And then showing us how not to do it

The last night

Firstly, apologies for not embedding the pics in the post but all the pic apps are blocked by my firewall.

We took a leisurely drive via Shimwells on Thursday to pick up my new exhaust....fortunately with the rest of the bike attached...and arrived at Country Trax mid-afternoon to find a large number of tents already set up. Fortunately, none were ours

On Friday morning, we discovered that Enduro's GPS wasn't working properly as the result of her fall on the WD Ladies weekend so couldn't download the track for the day and had to rely on mine alone....not a problem until we discovered that my GPS wasn't charging in the cradle (and, assuming it would be, I hadn't charged it completely the night before  ::) ). We rode part of the "Green" route before realising what had happened and, being some way behind Half-Bac's group, realised we couldn't afford to be stranded in the farmlands without any means of knowing where we were. I can just imagine Bertus the Medic's reaction to that rescue call   :eek7:

We followed tyre tracks for a while and when we found our way to a road, headed off to Piet Retief and then back to base...I must say we got back a good 2-3 hours before the first of the other groups.

The ride on Sat was great fun as I tagged onto Kallie and Francois' group, still with a slightly wayward GPS (it took me on an extra 30km round trip before I found them at the morning fuel stop). The ride was lengthened somewhat with Peter's XT600 springing multiple leaks in its already weathered tube. The funny part is that I only remembered to take out my camera when we had to stop for punctures, so it appears this is what we did all day. Big up the Peter - he removed that wheel and changed/patched tubes 3 times  :o

Eventually made it back around 5pm...a fantastic 8 1/2 hour experience!

Awesome weekend with great people - good to meet so many WD faces behind the nicks. Big up to Adrian and team - I can only imagine the huge effort and sleepless nights that went into organising this event  :thumleft:

PS Got loads of helmet-cam footage to edit as well...including the tunnel Jules missed   ;)
