Cape to Cairo on Motomias (200cc Chinese road bikes) - RR Part I
« on: September 21, 2011, 08:09:19 pm »
Hi all. This will be the trip report for our Cape to Cairo ride.

We left Cape Town on the 5th of September and are currently in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Our internet is not always so easy, but we've managed to post everyday on www.crossingafrica.co.za

This is just a quick overview of the first leg:

Day 1: Killarney race track (Odo: 42km)

We left late afternoon and got McDonalds on the way there. The lovely people at the track went out of their way to accommodate us and Paul Lehmann and Gail made us coffee before we camped out on the grid straight. Here we are eating our supper on the grid:

And the following morning we did a couple of laps before setting off to Cairo:

Day 2 - Springbok (Odo: 600km)

The bikes were still new, each having less than 300km on the clock, so we were still getting used to the cruising speed and engine noises. The highlight of the day were all the people's faces when we mentioned we're off to Cairo. We reached Sprinbok around 18h10 after seeing the last of the wild flowers:

Day 3 - Keetmanshoop, Namibia (Odo: 1 049 km)

We crossed the border in no time as usual at Vioolsdrif (except for Easter Weekend!) and tried to sort out our first data connection in Keetmanshoop. All the shops we're closed, so we had to leave it until the next day. We camped at Garas Park 20 km north of town.

The open road in Nam is great on a big bike, but gets long on a 200c doing 80km/h:

The campsite where we met some more bikers:

Bring julle die twee fietse terug, of bly hulle in Egipte?

Ek het verstaan Egipte is moeilik met die ingaan en hoë waarborge moet gelewer word

Sterkte en ons hou julle dop

Sal ook eendag so iets wil aanpak :ricky:

Dual, ons vat hulle in met Carnets, maar ons moet hulle terug skip anders verloor ons die deposito. Gelukkig is dit nog lank voor ons daar kom! hehe

I thought I was going to do the whole report for the first two weeks, but I couldn't drag myself from the tent at 5h00 this morning. The sun is out by 5h30 here!

We're off to the lake today. I wll try to continue the report when we have free WiFi at a camp.

In the meantime, check our daily updates on www.crossingafrica.co.za
