For the Z - Check the rims for cracks. The standard rims are prone to crack when taking a hard knock.

For the Z - Replace the cush drive rubbers every 10 000 / 15 000km's, they are prone to wear quickly and will cause premature damage to the chain and sprockets.

For the Z - If it's the 2009 model and has done any kilometers on the standard air filter there is a very good chance that the motor will begin to use oil. AFAIK, Yamaha has been willing to repaired all these motors under warrentee, this includes new barrel, piston & rings. Once this is done, the air filter gets replaced with the new DNA filter and the air box gets sealed entirely with red rubber grease. Any dealer worth his salt will do this when redoing the motor.

NB! The little plug at the bottom of the air filter breather pipe must remain in at all times (except when draining it) overwise it will suck in dust from the bottom up.

Progressive aftermarket fork springs are a big bonus.

The 660R comes with progressive springs but they are very soft. Fitment of preload spacers into the fork tubes does not cure the problem sufficiently.
The 660Z comes with linear springs which are also a bit on the soft side and - erm - not progressive.

Check higher mileage bikes for cracked frame tubes above the swingarm pivot. Especially if the bike might have been ridden hard and / or with plenty of luggage or two up.

Longer lasting generic polyurethane cush drive dampers are available to replace the fast wearing OEM parts. They cost a bit more but - last longer :D

Steering head bearings don't last long, also depending on how much dirt riding you will do. Average 15 000km on my bike. I think its a good idea to have them serviced every 10 000km, regardless.

Cost you a bit, but could save in the long run.

My bike has 44 000km on the clock and have not had any further issues. Also, I'm beginning to sence that it is only now run in. So anyone thinking of buying one, I would not sweat too much about the kilo's, as long as you ensure its been looked after by someone who knows.
...dis nooit te laat om n happy childhood te he nie !

…, I wish I could own them all, and until I can afford to own them all at once, I will own them one at a time...

I saw a nice XT600 1995 With 13000 km on the Clock today. The Bike looks good, runs nicely and has a long Range tank on. It had two owners and looks ok. What is the max a Bike like this is worth? Unfortunately I did'nt take a Pic.

2006 XT600, with 38 000km.
What to look out for?

And will it chug along at 120km/h?
Can only find info on the pre-2000 models.

XT600E, same from 1996? to the last one made. Last one AFAIK made in 2004? so check the 2006 claim.
Easily cruise at 120, but I do not take mine higher.

HI All

I am planning to buy a 2011 660z 2nd hand with 22000k's on the clock. The bike is in excellent condition (only about 500k's on dirt, rest is commuting)

Extras include: Crash bars, Flying brick soft luggage U-shape 65L, Spots, and rear luggage plate.

What would be the going rate for a bike like this?

Thank you please
