I have said this before, the Rhodes area for me is as close as you can get to DS riding heaven without actually having to die first to get there  ;D  :thumleft:

Having said that, I really believe that in KZN we are truly blessed with all the magnificent unspoiled and diverse riding areas that are right here on our doorstep  :ricky:
How can I be lost if I've got nowhere to go?

KaTooMatt, I think the piece you wrote sums it up wonderfully, thanks for that.
I live in Gauteng, and the only reason I would move to other parts of the country is to go explore where I haven’t explored yet.

I'm originally from the Lowveld and really miss it, lots of dirt roads for day trips. I'm now in Sandton and what a schlep to get to a good day's dirt road ride. Once you're on a dirt road and think "aah cool", bang it ends and you have to take another tar road to get to the dirt again, never mind the new settlements that spring up everywhere. Just too much tar around here. Yes we are pretty central but it takes a day or best part there of it to get to great spots. If I were to choose the best location to be based, it would be the Karoo. I drool at every RR posted by the guys down there. No need to trek for hours to get out of harms way/concrete jungle to have a great day out. The scenery is also just too awesome. A lot less tar down South me knows.

Cheers
Hi Captain

There are good opportunities here in Gauteng. A few week ago a mate of my rode all the way from Rosslyn to Rooibokkraal. Dirt all the way. a good 3 hour burn with only two tar crossings. I live out in Chartwell from my house I can get onto dirt within 5 minutes and stay on dirt all day between my place and Pelindaba. There are a lot of public roads that can take out to the Renoster spruit conservancy. Do yourself a favour and look at Google earth. It is easy to plan a decent dirt ride as you can see which roads are still dirt. Also In the Magaliesberg there are amazing opportunities near Skeerpoort. Try the pass over the mountain to Mountain Sanctuary. Spend the night there and explore the area.

Gauteng is great!

East Rand is further away from the Magalesburg, but 10 minutes from my house I can be on gravel and head south or east or north and stay on the gravel...... Not the finest scenary, but you can have a great ride getting to a fantastic lunch stop!

And I agree about google earth.....

Yes but a lot closer to Sabie. Also have you done any riding out near Middelburg? I expect the Olifants and Wilge valleys have amazing riding. Only been there in a cage though. I have yet to find a pannier that can handle a kayak.

I'd say Springbok. Moerse lekker rides in all directions from there. From PE you can only go 180 degrees.

No, you simply change to a wetbike.

Qachas Nek to Mohales Hoek following the Senqu River in Lesotho.
