Hello John,

I’m really sorry for the delay of my answer.

I thought your refund was treated by the accounting department

But actually, they don’t have this request.

So could you send me the form enclosed with the information of the person who paid your registration? (in this case I think it’s you)

I hope you understand the situation.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Best regards.

Hey Guys,

Tau - Followed your aspirations of the doing the Dakar for some time, and sorry to hear about your withdrawal.  But as they say - "there is always a next time".  I too have had dreams of doing it, and I had the opportunity to compete for 2012 along with my buddies, Neil & Greg (2012 entrants), but alas, finances is just a real party pooper :xxbah:.  Maybe one year in the very near future!!
BB - Thanks for your continued info on this sight and many other threads, always usefull.

So that brings me to this Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge.  Perhaps this would be a more realistic goal for now.  Any info would be appreciated, regarding - Date, Entry fee, hiring a race ready bike, license required, and anything else that could be usefull. It would be good to be able to make this a reality and ride with some home boys.

My background - not much really, other than being a week-end warrior with a full tank of enthusiam and a never give up attitude.  I raced in the local series around Jhb this year again.  Followed the 2010 Dakar with 5 mates and Girlfriend (now my wife).  And thats about it.  ;D

Howzit boet! Awesome vision. :thumright: Make no mistake and despite what some people like to say, the Dakar is absolutley NOT the rally to start on. Nevermind that anyway, because unless you have finished another FIM desert Rally somewhere else they wont even let you in these days!

I was told you need to get into it and do a couple of shorter ones first - apart from getting you into the groove for what is to come, often its not every rider's cup of tea; and it makes no sense to blow R500,000 on the Dakar only to realise too late that its not at all what you thought.

The DC is a great rally to start on not only because its one of the cheapest, but also because its actually a bloody tough one too. We are waiting for James West to come back to us regarding hire bikes, but now that youre on the scene I am making some enquiries elsewhere as well about getting some bikes. There could be 6 of us now who may be doing it already, and at least 4 of us will need bikes!

Big thing about rallies is the preparation and paperwork - a SOAB, but it separates those who talk about doing it from those who actually enter - a considerable feat in its own right! So as an intro, do some research yourself on it starting here> http://www.abudhabidesertchallenge.ae I would also look for some blogs on ADV rider - there are couple of good stories out there. All the best, and let us know how things go! :ricky:

Thx markdiver.

Everything in life happens for a reason. Sometimes it is not lekker, but so is life.

I will not commit until ASO has refunded me. I cannot spend anymore money on racing that is a pipe dream, my mental state won't last :imaposer:.

Entry fees looked like around R23 000 last year.  I have not made a final decision on taking my own bike or renting, but I love my bike and in sand she is stunning.

For me doing the DC will take a huge bite out of my "very limited" rallye budget.

If there is more saffers taking there own bikes we can fill a 6m container and all spares and tyres which when there is 5-6 bikes works out very cheap. Consider that you can then take tyres mooses and gear from SA at cheaper prices.

I have handed in a plan to my MSA official for 2012 for some support for a Rallye class at the National Offroad series.

Some rates from 2011

Shipping from La Spezia (Genova, Italy) - Dubai = $750

Entry $2800

So I suppose even if you rent for high price just shipping from RSA or Europe will set you back R6000+

Hey John.

Shipping is a bitch. Not an easy bypass there. sadly all the companies that deal with the challenge aremainly focussed on getting the bikes/cars truck in from europe rather than the rest of the world.Must have something to do with the fact that the French and Spanirds are the main customers with the South African being the main dreamers.

I am going to try and see what other options are available from here that may nbe able to help you.

Ok Gents.

I must appologise as i have been a littkle self absorbed with work. it would seem my bosses expect me to do some work and not day dream about the Challenge or the Dakar.

I have spoken to Sam Smith at Sandstorm (another bike shop here) and he has also indicated that they will be doing bikes if the challenge happens. He cannot give me an indication on cost as they are trying to figure out if they are going to by new bikes or if they are going to use their current stock. Interesting thing is he has had an enquiry from Robertsons racing in SA for 3 riders there. Do any of you guys know them?

I will send him an email as i had to James so that you guys can enquire at will to find out what is happening.

Thanks BB, I had already looked at the official Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge site, but unfortunately it is all related to the past 2011 event.  There is nothing regarding advise, entry or any mention in fact of the 2012 race. (if there is to be one)  So I guess, we will keep hunting and see what we can find.
If anything pops up that is usefull from my side, I will post straight away.
Sharing a container is definately the way to go if there are any who will be taking bikes and spares.  We did the same when we went to Argentina, with 6 adventure bikes into 20' container.  So should be easy for 6 rallye bikes, possibly could even take 7.
Good hunting all!!

Well, finally managed to make my way through to Sand Storm Motorcycles in Dubai.  Have been in talks with owner Mark Lane today and will hopefully have more news soon.  They are a very keen outfit for Rally racing and have just taken on/sponsored, the young and super fast Dakar entrant Sam Sunderland.  After a good visit and talking to Sam, we are heading out to the desert tomorrow on Honda 450 Rally machines.  I could not be more stoked.  Mark has been kind enough to loan me his bike and Sam will be my guide.  What more could a dog ask for, it just does not get better than this.  Now I just have to somehow keep up and stay on the bike.  Wish me luck!!  I am back in SA on the week-end and hopefully by then I will have more updates regarding the Desert Challenge.
