I got this feed back today from SandStorm Motorcycle in Dubai today.

"1 - To have a bike the same as Sam Sunderlands, fully prepped will cost
35,000dhs to rent.  R 76,637.25 at todays exchange rate
2 - To have an older model bike, the same as Sam Smiths (Mark rode both)
will cost 25,000dhs to rent.  R 54,719.00

Support is the same cost for either bike or indeed if you wanted to enter
your own bike (ie KTM). This cost is 4,000dhs  (R 8,759.50) plus any parts used and
consumables such as oil etc.

We have a cut off date for riders to register with us of 15th February so
do please let us know as soon as you can so we can start to get things
organised."

I particularly like the support package on it's own - could be well worth it.

That's pretty reasonable for a race ready bike and support. What bike is Sam riding? Will the same team that is doing Sam supporting us as well if we go for this option?

BB  - When I was there, I understood it as follows:  The support will come directly from SandStorm and their staff.  The bike would be of the same spec that Sam was riding.  I am sure that Sam would be part of his Honda factory team, as he raced in the Dakar, since he has been given a 3 year contract, but not completely sure about that one.  I have sent off more questions to them today.  Will info soonest.  I agree that the support package is really worth it.

Shoot! And I thought it was expensive (especially the "older" bike option). Does anyone know what it cost roughly to get a bike there and back to SA?

What fuel range is needed (typically) for this race?

Entry fee, cost of accommodation and meals?

What does the support package include: you get the labour for daily oil, filters and tyre changes when needed and a bike wash? Labour for repairs if needed? You then get a bill for all consumables and parts used.

Below are some questions I asked the ADDC organisation

1.        What is the difference between WITH Advertising & WITHOUT Advertising?  As a privateer which entry fee would be applicable to me? (Overseas Competitor)

The competitors are normally required to take the organizers advertising stickers, but if you promised all the ad space to your sponsor you won’t take our advertising and your entry fees will increase. Most privateers take the package WITH advertising.

2.        Please could you clarify what the Team Entry per vehicle is at $45 per vehicle, min 3 & max 5?

You may team up with min 2 to maximum 4 bikes to go as a team to qualify for a team award. In this case, team entry should be paid and team name will appear on the entry lists.

3.        Does entry fee for motorcycle include the road book?

Yes

4.        Are children allowed into the Bivouac?

Yes

5.       What additional fees may be required for a competitor, e.g. Desert taxes etc?

The entry fees cover your petrol, road books, insurance, food in the Bivouac – you don’t need to pay any extras.

Your additional expenses would be for navigation equipment (paid to ERTF and TDCOM), shipping, accommodation in Abu Dhabi and any other travel / logistics expenses that may arise.

In terms of fuel range - The route has not been made known yet, or what the distances per day are.  However I think one would have to prepare for 200-300km stages.
Shipping of bike to Dubai there and back - Investigating at the moment - Anyone with input on this would also be appreciated.

More updates from SandStorm

1, We can provide you with a brand new Rally bike fully prepped for approximately DHS 100,000.
2, We can rent you Sam Sunderlands bike for DHS 35,000 including full support for the Challenge.
3, We can sell you Sam Sunderlands bike outright for DHS 55,000.

There is only one Sunderland bike, this is the bike you rode and liked. we also have two older 2008 bikes, with full rally kit, same as the other bike you rode.  These are to be DHS 25,000 with support.

:(  Unfortunately not - I have withdrawn from the race now finally.  My bike is not ready (decided to have my own and not going to rent) and work commitments are the other pain.  So hopefully some other time this year.

The confirmation dates have come too late for me. I have already committed to work.

The prices are affordable and compelling. Pity.

I am in for the Desert challenge.

I set a cople of goals for myself in order to Race ride the 2012 Abu Dhabi Desert challenge.

For fear of Jinxing myself i am going to refrain from posting anything about my prep and then the actual race until i am finished.

Please can you guys give me some ideas/tips for the journey ahead?

Some serious choices ahead!

Brilliant!  :thumleft: You're going to LOVE it.

I wouldn't worry about jinxing yourself at all (that's all bull -bluebull- anyway), just don't ride too hard, rather ride 60% in your training and rather ride for a bit longer. Train on an motor cross track if you have one near you. No big jumps mind you! The idea is to ride over the terrain, which will tire you out much faster and a ride in the desert. No sure what more I can say -you know what to do.

I need to commit to this this week, I'm very keen. I have managed to shuffle my work schedule around so the dates are still open and its over Easter, so that helps a little. Still thinking about how do I broach this to my wife.  :patch: Also a little bit concerned about my current level of fitness.

Kenesis, since I have not done a desert race, I don't think I am in a position to give you advice.  But I will repeat and say what Sam Sunderland said to me.  "SET UP & SUSPENSION" -  will make the world of difference to your ability in the desert.  I found that to be blantantly obvious and good advice, because when I swopped bikes with him and rode his well prepared bike, I swear I was 20% faster, just from the confidence that the bike gave me.

Good luck and all the best with the race and look forward to your RR.

I think that i have the fitness thing under wraps. I have been racing motocross since September and well it deffinately has helped in my skill level.  I decided to start racing the masters class here and well i am still stone last and well i shouldnt complain as the guys i am racing almost all of them started racing when they were younger than 10 years old. It started off with me getting lapped every 3rd lap an now i am at a point that i no longer get lapped and i am 4 sec a lap behind the guy infront of me. I have been gyming/Rowing/Spinning 4 times a week for the last 6 weeks and i feel great. I managed to lose 10 KG and another 5 before the challenge!

BB i wouldnt worry too much about the fitness as 6 weeks is more than enough time to get this sorted. Get your wife on board and come and join me!

Thanks Markdiver. Luckily i have Sean Gaugain helping me with my Suspension. He has the most rally experience and and he himself has one the Desert challenge. So he carries a huge amount of experience and is the best equipped to help me through the challenge. It helps that he is my mate and he would also like to see me succeed.

Sam is also a good freind of mine, he is young and if he gets his navigation sorted he will be a force to be reckoned with. We had lunch at the MX on Friday and he is super excited for the challenge! Ill try and drag some more infor out of him this week end about his bike and team etc.

Ill start taking photo`s of the bike build and I will start a Build thread about it!
