Saturday ride in our own backyard

WHILE Saturday morning dawned cold and unappetising Calle and I met at the BP station in Klapmuts for a welcome cup of coffee and to plan a ride to nowhere in particular.
Leaving our coffee we headed over the N1 onto the gravel headed for Eenzaamheid farm.
Exiting onto the Fisantekraal road we took a short tar ride and left onto the cross country road exiting at the Agter Paarl Microlight landing and Windmill.
A quick race down and into the Saturday rush in Wellington and then left at the base of Bains Kloof pass onto the Groenfontein Road past Welbedacht farm and the disused ammunition factory headed for Hermon.
On reaching Hermon we pealed off to Riebeeckasteel and took the farm roads across the base of the small town.
And passing one farm we spotted a group of Emus, which on stopping they immediately came up to the fence supposedly hoping it was feeding time.
We later learned that Emu farming is becoming a fast growing business in the country with more than 60 farms now breeding the birds.
It was interesting to learn that they are rich in oil used to help with a host of  ailments including high cholesterol. The feathers are also used and the skin is used to manufacture leather products very much like ostrich skin.
We took a short break at the Barn with breakfast and the start of the England Scottish World cup game and then again threw a leg over the bikes and headed out and onto the Haaskraal Road past the porcelain kiln and shortly stopped to photograph a bright yellow crop sprayer parked alongside the road.
Our next stop was at Windmill where a wine festival was brightening up the Saturday morning.
It was a real festive affair with a lively live band and an excellent raconteur relating brilliant Platteland stories very much in the manner of the great Tolle.
With the idea of arriving home by 1pm I left the festivities and Calle and rode back across country past Calendonville farm and Leeuwendans farm exiting on the Slent road close to the wind generators and then an easy quick ride through Klipheuwel onto Occudale Road, over Contermans Kloof and home via Richwood.
The five hours on the road saw 210km logged up on my GPS.
A pleasant mornings ride on some great traffic free roads and all in our own backyard.
