Trip to Kruger national Park
« on: October 06, 2011, 11:02:39 am »
A week today my wife and I intend riding up to KNP. This will be the first decent trip for our new G650GS and it is going to be interesting to compare the comfort compared to our '09 KLR (recently traded in).

The route we will follow will be Howick; Ladysmith; Vryheid; Paulpietersburg; Piet Retief; Amsterdam; Badplaas; Barberton; Nelspruit (where we will collect a hire car) and then onto Ingwenya Lodge.
The return might be a little less planned.

We want to break the trip to Nelspruit and we were thinking of staying over at either Paulpietersburg or Piet Retief.  Does anyone have any suggestions regarding a reasonably priced accommodation in either of these dorps?

On the way back we will have two or three days to burn and we will more or less follow the front wheel. :)

I would suggest perhaps staying over in Swaziland... ???
The three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40 and a hammer.  If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape.  If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.  Otherwise use the hammer.

I am not too sure that travelling through Swaziland is going to be as quick to Nelspruit but should you decide on this, here's the shortest route through for you. In at Golela Border post in the South, up through Manzini, you can try staying at Mantenga Lodge or Smokey Mountain Village Hotel. I've stayed at both but some time back, they were both reasonably priced and clean then.
Through/by-pass Mbabane and out at Oshoek, then it's a great ride to Badplaas, Baberton onto Nelspruit. The two places to stay, mentioned above, are marked on the gdb route map attached.
The reason for my comment above is that travelling in Swaziland is slower because of numerous speed limit reductions down to 60 & 80km/h through little settlements etc all the way up. Oh and also be on the look out for cattle on the roads.
Hope this helps. Have a great trip.

Cheers
