The GSC is open for prev entrants
« on: June 25, 2007, 12:07:25 pm »
Just received an email that tells me that I can pre enter for the 07 GSC this year. Nice...NOT!!!

They (BMW) are still not telling where it will be (they will send us the co-ords 1 week before the event...), plus you can order clothing now, but they can't show me what it will look like.  Plus, it costs R2500 this year!!! :o

Now, the Alfie Cox DS festival costs R2000, and then you sleep in a bed!  ::) Wonder where I would go..."GO!!"

Oh ja... I forgot, I don't have a BMW anymore... ;D

So here's the Problem,

Self - R2500
G/F - R 2500

Distance to venue = about 1000km there and same back. About R800.00 on fuel.
Sleep over en route - R 1000.00 (Two nights at R250.00/Night/Person)

So now we go to R 7000.00 Plus for Three Days of Riding at the venue.

For this kind of money, I can go tour through Botswana for around 8 Days, do what I want, when I want, Do some Tiger Fishing, Relax, etc, etc, etc

Botswana is really starting to look like an option.

So, whats the opinion of you guys on the GSAGSC ?

I think it's way overpriced!  Last year was R1600/person if I remember correct.  Let's do the sums for BMW:

700 entrants x R 2500 =  R 1 750 000
  -  meals @ R 100/entrant/day = R 280 000
  -  tent plus other admin stuff = R 100 000
  -  1st price bike = R 100 000

  -  Plus all the insurance work after the GSC  :o

They're making plenty out of the "lifestyle".  Even if I still had my GS, I would not attend. No way.

I Like Camo - Joe' maths .  I also have to pay two entry fees, ride the 1000 plus kays there and back again, which means 4 days on the road, two overnights plus any damage you do to the bikes whilst on the event. Not even going to the Bar Bill!  Maybe BMW is trying to limit the numbers because of last year's large participation? I think they are doing a good job of it! Add to the fact that Alfie Cox welcomes any roadworthy dual sport bike, the rides are not red route type stuff and you sleep in your own room with bathroom for R2000,00 , I suspect Alfie may be totally oversubscribed.

Whilst I thought the organisation at last year's event was good , it is not worth R2,500 per person to sleep in my own tent.  BMW are either actively trying to discourage entrants or they are taking the GS experience too far. Maybe they are alternating between Cape Town entries and JHB / PTA every alternate year?   Either way my bikes are staying at home - I can do a lot of good riding with the 8 to 10 k that this thing will set me back.

Our 2006 Namibia trip

9 Days.
Also tents.
Drink of choice whenever you wanted one and cold with ice.
Steaks, wors, spare ribs, warm mealies etc. etc.
Fuel
Camping space
Great riding.
Great time with friends.
Seeing a great country riding dirt 95% of the time (In Namibia)
Entry into National Park
Zero damage to bike. (did go down 3 times though)
One new tyre for the bakkie.

Cost:  +- R 4 500 p/p.

If you dot it the "Adventure Way", you can do it much cheaper as well.

I was concidering going to the GSC this year, as it would have been my first. NOT ANYMORE!! >:( Wanted to take my son with as it is held during school holidays... For the entrance fee and extras I can plan a much cheaper trip for us, and I will not be riding in the dust of hundreds of other bikes (so i've heard... ;))

Not worth it.  I'm not that fanatic that I will spent that amount of money on an event that is that now so exclusive that it is rediculous.  They can keep it.  Sorry.  I will rather go on the Wilddog bash.

The first year we went in 2005 it was great fun and only 600 people, cost was around R900. The skills challenge is something to see, but to pay R2500 for that is ludicrous. Like JJ said the weekend end up costing you R5000 or R7000RAND. If they think they are that exclusive, they better catch a wake up

They made it clear it was a non profit exercise.  ??? Ja riiiight, non profit for us, much profit for them.

No thank you very much, that's a plain rip off, there's only one reason I would go and that's if I am a good rider to go and win the R130000 price.

Wildcoast Challenge is up early next year, only 500 entries available and it won't cost you much more than R800 all inclusive. ;D ;)

By the looks of things we can have the Wilddog bash in their time slot >:D ;D
