Since we all love riding mountain passes so much, and after reading The Romance of Cape Mountain Passes by Graham Ross, some riding buddies and I decided to make this a WD project.

The aim is to document as many of the passes in SA in this section as possible.  Please create a separate thread for each pass.  Name the thread the pass' real name (for future indexing and  searching purposes).  Try and provide us with the following:

- Its location - either on a map (graphic), typed directions or GPS co-ordinates - or a combination
- A short history of the pass, especially its previous names, the builder, alternative routes etc
- A few pics of the pass
- A pic of the sign with the pass's name on, with your bike in background off-course ;D
- Interesting stats like its altitude, the road condition, length etc

Don't worry if you don't get everything with the first try, since its a WD project others will fill in the gaps as they too explore these beautiful passes of our country.  So feel free to add to other's posts.

I have about 83 passes in the old Cape Province documented on my map - i'll start posting the names soon

You're welcome to offer further suggestions to improve this project.

Cheers
Hein

What about neigbouring countries?

Is this strickly SA only?

Was thinking Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Moz, Zimbabwe.

All sharing the border with RSA.

A separate section for this?

This section was a very good idea! Maybe later on we can have one for historic bridges as well?

I was thinking about war artefacts like forts, bunkhouses, etc etc.  Maybe a 'historical buildings/structure' thread - including forts, bridges, Welshman etc

Kilroy

Suggestion - how about spliting this a little - ie: into regions, so if I am planning a ride in a region I can easily see if there are passes to ride??
Or perhaps all new passes titles to be preceded by province, ie: "Eastern Cape - ____-"

It's a friggen motorcycle, it's not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The windnoise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you shit your pants every now and then. Suck it up. -- Scary Gary MC

The latter sounds good - start with province

This is the book KiLRoy refers to.  I recommend it to anyone who enjoys riding over the passes.

Please guys - read the original post in this thread

when you submit a pass, try to include some basic info like what the road is like, what the views are like, how busy it is, etc.
Some history on the pass will be extremely welcome as well

thanks

Over time I have built up a database of 173 mountain passes in SA.

I have the names and the co-ordinates of each one of the 173 passes. I have it in excel format so I cannot post it here. I would like to add as much detail to these passes as I can.

Any suggestions ??

I also have a .gdb file indicating these 173 passes.
