Van Collers Pass (Alldays - Waterpoort) LP, dirt

More manne en dames

This is my contribution. The pass is called the Van Collers Pass. It is situated between Alldays and Waterpoort in the Limpopo province. Short history:

Mr van Coller and his wife, bought land in the Soutpansberg, which they farmed. Their only means of transport was canoeiing down the Sandrivier to the bridge towards Waterpoort. She fell ill with malaria, was canoeed to Waterpoort and taken to Louis Trichardt hospital. She asked her husband to build a road while she was recovering. He started the project, but while busy, she died in hospital. He carried on with the pass and completed it.
Her remains were transported on this pass where she was buried on the farm. Meanwhile the land was bought out by the famous ZZ2 tomato growers. The pass is still in its original condition. The following data about it available:

GPS Co-ords:

S  22 44.628
E  029 34.405

Lenght: Approx 7-8 kays. End on property and u-turn must be made.

Time to ride: Provide 3-4 hours. Scenery is awesome. Left side at stages, 150-200 meter shear drop downs towards the Sandriver. Dangerous!!!!

Plenty of wildlife like:

Birdlife
Warthog
Baboons (plenty)
Snake Species (Black mamba,puff- adder, Mozambique spitting cobra)
Kudu and small antelope

Beautiful main gate entrance. Must take time here because of the views and danger. Would grade it between 3-5.

Thanks for this - I am looking for interestinf rides to the north!

Using those coords T4A says it's "Moegeval Restcamp". Can you provide more waypoints - ie: which side to approach from? Can you provide more info on Moegeval Restcamp?

Thanks

Ldog, you are quit right. Moegeval belongs to 1 of my clients and I stayed in the bushie at Moegeval. My fault. Better direction is to get to the town of Waterpoort. Leave town and turn left. At a stage you will cross a bridge across the Sandriver. Just past the bridge you will see the Van Collers Pass gate on your lefthand side. Will try and post pics tonight otherwise pm me please.

LostD, Moegeval Restcamp is private. It was developed by the cattle(14 000 of them) ranch owner himself. He uses it for hunting and entertaining family, friends. I am just fortunate to be his supplier of spare parts for his earthmoving machines and got in on invite. Wont say the main farm(Mollevel Voerkrale), is not biker friendly. Had a chat with my old friend Leo. This could be a great firm base if you want to explore that area. Moegeval has sleeping place for 8 people(could pitch tents on lawn),sufficient ablution, kitchenette, braai area, genset for lights and a"donkey" system for hot water. One thing these people will never run out off is firewood. Could be arranged. Really beautifull. The silence at night, sound of nature, clear skies and the smell of the "hardekool" fire, is very good for the soul.
I also believe there is plenty accomodation available in the surrounding area but we can always try.

Maybe this is more accurate - PH I think you are showing the whole train track.

Excalibur - I'm just waiting to crack the nod - I'll be there - looks excellent!

Yes, quit right. We didnt complete the who pass. Went down to the river and made a u-turn back up. Spoke to Leo last night. Suggest 1 rider in the group to have a licenced hand gun. That area is "vrot" with leopard. Farmers explained that it is because of the drought. We counted 9 sets of spoor in a radius of 4 kilos. Could get a bit of a surprise. Old saying applies for me"prevention is beter than cure" Snakes were also very active in winter here.

Excaliber, making a strong case for birth control there.   :confused5:

Thanks for posting, this is the kind of place we'll never know about otherwise.

If any of you want to go and ride in that area let me know, got family in the Waterpoort area and grew up there.  Van Collers is real scary riding on the back of a Ford F 250  ::)

Excallibur, you say one needs about 4 - 5 hours to ride this pass. Is that an accurate accessment for 4.5km?
Is there anyone from this forum who lives up in this area? I will be going up there on the 28th and if there's someone who wants to do this pass with me I would be very grateful!

LDog, the total distance of the pass we did was about 4-5 kays, down into the Sandriver. Here we stopped because we were informed that the pass ends in private property. It is not dangerous for the physical track experienced, but dangerous with the shear cliffs on the left from the starting point of the pass. I graded it between 3-5. The reason why it takes time, is the view as you progress through it. You must ride, stop and check the scenery out and just appreciate nature. I plan to go there on the 9th of August, not just to ride the pass but also recognoitre the surrounding areas. I believe there are beautiful dirt roads. Have not explored this area before and would like to do it.

Excaliber,
Would love to join you but will be on our way to Nam that time.

Oh the Dakky started to leak so much oil lately that I was forced to send it in for repairs. It managed 122k so after the gasket and bearing transplant it should be OK for another few 1000.
