OK this was a brief listing of not nearly everything in the 650GS/Dakar category, BUT it just shows how many duplications there are about the same subject, not to mention the Bobnob's thread which is a gazillion pages of everything mixed up into one thread.

I would think that if this is done extensively it would make all the sections much less cumbersome and only a pleasure to navigate through. Yes, yes I know there is a search function, but it would be damn nice if there is only one thread per topic ( :peepwall:)

EDIT: Please can a mod help me to tidy up the headings and align all the links neatly (I know I am being pedantic)

Hi I'm Arne, and new at this
I have a F650GS DAKAR 2002 model
i want to fit crash bars to the frame
What would you recommend
a. drilling into the frame to attach a bracket
b. weld the bracket to the frame

Hi Arne

Do you already have crash bars  or your bike that you want to fit or are you looking to purchase crash bars?

Usually crash bars are designed and manufactured model specific to bolt onto the bike's frame where existing bolts, nuts or threaded holes are. So there is no need to drill  holes or even worse to weld them to you bike.

Drilling holes will weaken the strength of the frame and welding crash bars can cause more damage to the frame in the case of an accident or when the bike tumbles over.

The below link will give you a good idea how model specific crash bars are fitted to a bike.

Hi Black Hawk
ok so welding and drilling the frame is not recommended
I'min the process of making crash bars from dia 25mm tube.
the ones you linked me too, connect to the engine mounting bolts, probably with a bush to make up the space, and on the bottom to the round tube frame
can you confirm this
or any other suggestions

That is correct, the crash bars on the given link bolt on to the engine mounting bolts or to existing threaded rods on the frame.

It all depends where you want to drill to attach the crash bars, it can weaken your frame. I don't recommend welding on your frame as it will become an "permanent fixture to your bike and can cause a lot of damage to the frame in the event of a side stand incident or a crash. If you decide to weld on you bike....PLEASE disconnect your battery from the bike, other wise you will fry the electronics and it will be a costly exercise.

Best is to make a set of crash bars that bolt onto your frame.

Arne
Your radiator can be repaired/reconditioned (usually) by any reputable radiator workshop...
Otherwise you can try ACME in south JHB, ACME bike salvage to be more accurate...

But I would FIRST get it repaired, or at least get a QUOTE for repairs...
