Me and Cave Girl did this pass on the way to the 2012 Bash. It was in the dry and easily ridable with the KLR's, but the wind was pumping up there. I won't like to try it in the wet or snow though!
Great news, my book 'Sniffer' has seen the light of day on Amazon Kindle!

I have done it a few times, it is an awesome track, hugs the Lesotho border and has some amazing views.
How can I be lost if I've got nowhere to go?

Hello, I have been onRhodes pass in December 2012 riding alone on wet and misty conditions. .. a great motivation to concentrate even more...not much traffic...it took me +- 3 & 1/2 hours from Mt Flecher to Rhodes...

This was with various photos stop (sorry, I lost my phone in the pool since...of course no back up).
The road conditions were very good even if wet. There is one thing is when you have reached what you believe is the top at 2500 meters about sea level, you carry on climbing upto 2625...before actually descending on Rhodes side of the pass. Then was a water crossing... about 1/2 meter deep...more excitement to the ride...and also adding some more concentration for not to fall...
Absolutely fantastic memories. I will do it again. Thinking of going and base myself in Rhodes; they are 7 passes nearby to be done...and the Rhodes hotel do have a very nice pub with a great whisky selection ! Not to be missed ...
Enjoy !

The first time I drove this road was with my Ford Sierra with our 6 berth caravan. My wife and kids weren't very impressed by the spectacle and I thought it was a lot more dirt road than I had signed up for. When I drove through there last year on our way back from Cape Town we saw a bunch of cyclists haring down the hill to Rhodes. Must have been a bit of a puff on the way up though! Ian

The whole of the Barkly East area and all its passes are a must for everyone.I have done 99% of the area in my Jeep Wrangler now I must do it on the bike.Stunning country.I will go back many times.
I have attached a map of the area for those interested(I'm not sure where I got this map so I give credit to who belongs to)

Be careful of Rhodes and the hotel. The Hotel seems to be changing hands every second week and no bookings or deposits are secure.
The bar at the hotel also got trashed last weekend, some local politics or something. Even the police got dondered by locals.

Can certainly recommend Bidstone. The wartrail through to Tiffendale is brilliant. Naude's Nek to Maclear can be VERY hectic when wet, especially 2 up with shepherds herding their sheep and cattle along the road. The scenery is magnificent.  Maybe in December :3some:.
Bum in the saddle, always.

My mense boer in die omgewing en hierdie is seker my gunstelling bergpas. Het hom al in enige toestand gedoen en gereeld paar keer per dag. Sal bietjie foto's uitgrawe en opsit.
- you reckon that thing will pop a wheelie? We're about to find out, SLAP that pig!

Enjoyed your pics and story. Nicely presented. Just a couple of points I think I would like to correct if you don't mind in the interests of accuracy for other riders following in your tracks in the future.

1. This is not the highest pass in SA, but the second highest. Sani Pass is wholly in SA as the SA border control point is still on SA soil, whereas the actual RSA/Lesotho border is at the summit. This makes Sani Pass easily the highest at 2876m and 289m higher than Naudes Nek.

2. The other point is that the sign that shows the summit as being 2500m (in your photograph) is not actually the summit, but a view-site and the intersection to the Tenahead Lodge. The true summit is a good few kms further west and registers in at 2587m.
