Over the last couple of months, it has come to our attention that shopping centres around the country and in particular, the V&A Waterfront, are making less and less space available for motorbike parking.

Although we have gone the route of complaints and requests to the management of the V&A Waterfront for more available parking, all we have received are standardised letters. They state that from mid October there will be motorcycle parking available in front of the new "Link Mall". Requests for a viable interim solution went unanswered.

What has happened so far:

The V&A Waterfront management gradually reduced the areas officially designated as motorcycle parking. To our knowledge, there is currently no motorcycle parking available at all. Some of the motorcycle parking (in front of the Victoria & Alfred Mall) was swallowed by the construction site of the new Link Mall, some was just removed without any obvious reason (the parking on the corner of the Union Castle Building).

In addition the informal motorcycle parking opposite Ferryman's and Mitchell's was gradually reduced in size by obstructing it with flower pots.

Instead of trying to find a viable parking solution for motorcycles, the V&A management decreased the available areas to the point when the parked motorcycles started to block access for deliveries and emergency vehicles as well as for pedestrians.

The actions of the V&A Management against visiting motorcyclists culminated in clamping motorcycles parked anywhere in the pedestrian zone and marking the remainder of the informal motorcycle parking opposite of Mitchell's a "no parking" zone.

The V&A Waterfront management thereby sends a message to all motorcyclists to park in areas provided for cars as not even their security personnel is able to direct motorcyclists to designated motorcycle parking.

They ignore the fact that motorcyclists in general contribute to a de-escalation of parking and urban traffic problems.

If this goes unanswered, it is likely that other role players will follow suit. More shopping malls and public places will remove designated motorcycle parking areas or enforce laws with regards to informal non obstructing parking of motorcycles on pavements and in pedestrian zones.

We will go to the Waterfront in the morning of Sunday July 8th with our motorcycles. We will meet at the communal parking area at the Mouille Point Lighthouse off Beach Road in Green Point at 08.00 am and proceed in an orderly manner to the Waterfront from there.

Every individual owning a motorcycle or scooter is welcome to join us for a leisurely visit of the V&A Waterfront.

We will proceed to park at the open car park opposite of the BMW Pavillion in an orderly manner. One bike per parking bay. If the space should not suffice; there is more free parking at the far end of the mall towards the Table Bay Hotel.

A statement will be prepared which everyone is welcome to sign. It will be handed to the Waterfront management.

The statement will include some points from above and will ask the Waterfront management to return their property to what it used to be for many years:

A motorcycle friendly environment.
