Gee, thanks guys, it is indeed a Little Rush Warbler (Afr: Kaapse Vleisanger). Now to just spot one in the reeds...

Aggro little shits when in breeding plumage. Chap I know was so tired of his chasing all the other birds away, so he caught it in his mist net, trimmed the tail and all was well.

They are also brood parasites using mainly Waxbills to raise their young.

Unusual visitor to our garden. Dont see them often here. Really beautiful bird and able to make quite a racket.

In German we call them Specht - and possibly also in Dutch, so, presumably the Afrikaans word for them became Speg!

This is the other way round again. Pied Barbet in english and Bont Houtkapper in afrikaans.

Pardon me for butting in here... I need a bird ID in Florida, USA (not Florida, Gauteng

), if anyone is able to help.

See the attached picture... has anyone seen this before? We find oranges like these under our orange tree in the morning. The prime suspect would be a woodpecker, I think? I've never seen anything like it.

The usual culprits can be ruled out, I think: raccoons, squirrels, rats, opossums, flying squirrels. I'm sure it must be a bird.

I do not think that is a bird (but I am guessing here).
The outside of the fruit seems scoured, and the holes are too regular. Also, the inside is eaten far too clean. I am thinking some kind of bug. Can you perhaps post a bigger, clearer picture of the damaged fruit?

Thanks Leon! Unfortunately this is the only picture I have.

I don't think it's snails - we've lived in this house for a few years now and have never seen snails anywhere, ever. However, we have tons of frogs...

I've e-mailed the picture to the agriculture department at the local university, they help people with their gardening issues. Let's see if they can ID this. I'll let you know what they say.

It's not a problem, we don't eat these oranges, they're way to sour. I'm just intrigued.
