I recently (28 November) did a lil 14 day trip from Cape Town through the Karoo and onto the northern reaches of the Transkei - a bunch of old school friends and my sons and their friends made up the 11 man group - 9 X 800GS's and an "amphibious" Defender see photo below.
The Karoo is always a treat and it changes as much as it stays the same ... after the obligatory ride along the route 62 and up and over the Seweweeks poort we hunkered down in a shed 10km before Calitzdorp - The Skuur, Matjiesvlei Cottages – Bokwagtershuis ... for a big group its a great place to stay.
The second photo below is some of us with the infamous Ronnie of Ronnie's Sex Shop fame ... he being the sprightly fella in the middle (wif no shoe op hims foot coz him skop a klippie some day backs).
Day 2 we clung to the dirt roads to Steytlerville and stayed outside of the town at Noorspoort Guest Farm - Oom Danie Cravens old farm, run by his grandson Danie.
One of the highlights was the ride from Bedford to Hogsback ... the long way round vis The Katberg Pass (gotta do it) and then the track from Seymore to Hogsback ... the folks at Hogsback had said "Whatever you do ... don't ride that road!!" - Well the Katberg Pass paled into insignificance as we bounced up a boulder encrusted pathway
The Transkei is a beautiful place ... despite a few kids throwing stones and a few moronic 20 year olds showing us "cut throat" signs it was really pleasant. Funnily enough our only theft incident was when we were on the ferry crossing the Kei and a kind old lady helped us ease the load on the Landy by stealing my computer bag, phone and iPad (what a score for her). Thats her in the blue in the ferry photo ... anyone know her?
