Botswana Desert Race 2012
« on: January 10, 2012, 11:10:18 am »
It seems that there is not going to be a Botswana Desert race this year.

That is really bad news - was such a great event last year.

Let's hope it is something that the organisers are working on and hopefully we can have it sorted and have a race!!

Message from Alan Reid, last year's organiser:

"Hi

Thanks for the mail but due to an issue / dispute between Motorsport SA / Bike Commission and Botswana Motor Sport there will not be a Mantshwabisi in 2012

We are really disappointed but we cannot fight officialdom

Alan"

Biggest issue probably lies with MSA, if you ask me!  :dousing:

MX and Circuit Bikes have broken away from MSA afaik... the rest are bound to follow.
The court found MSA's rules to be in conflict with various laws and the Constitution.

Wrong, The court dismissed the MSA application on technical grounds. So no actual ruling, MSA just stuffed up their application.

No, a dismissal is a ruling!

and the actual ruling
http://www.saflii.org/za/cases/ZAGPPHC/2011/210.html
Reading between the lines and from my sources the judge has his doubts that this case would stand the test of the Constitution with regard to the right of free association and other laws, especially the Competition Act which opposes cartels etc.
MSA, if it was serious would have made haste in this regard but since the ruling has dragged its feet and turned a blind eye to the competitors wishes, they even closed shop and went on leave while they in fact have a crisis of magnitude to attend to... they have for far too long had the club in the hand to batter organizers, clubs and competitors into submission without really doing much to uplift the sport. Now they are exposed as toothless old dogs drooling on the stoep of mediocrity. >:D

As one of the marshals I have heard nothing... yet I would not be surprised due to the lack of management of last year's race. Alot of key officials have stepped down this year as well.

This is the race I was really looking forward to.  Have also sent and enquiry to the guys in Bots, but have not heard anything.  Only the cars are on the MSA Calendar.

This is a very nice event and I hope that they can get it off the ground!

Good news!!!

Press release

In 1975 The Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa – Gauteng Branch (FWDCSA) held the first Trans Kalahari Road race in the Vryburg area, then in 1980 the race moved to Botswana and the Toyota Desert Race was born. The first bikes competed in the event in 1986; with quads joining a few years later and for most of the time Bikes and Quads have been an integral part of the annual Toyota Desert 1000 Race (TDR), which is part of the ABSA Off Road series.

The FWDCSA is pleased to announce that The Mantshwabisi 1000 event is once again an addition to the Southern Africa Off Road Bike and Quad calendar.

This marathon race now in its second year as a stand-alone event is named after the village which the race used for many years as an overnight stop; brings with it all the history and the legacy of the past but in a new format for bikes and quads which will soon rival similar events such as the Roof of Africa and the Baja.

Taking place on June 21st and 22nd 2012 (before the TDR) the competitors will use 2 loops of 250 kilometers as their route, beginning and ending at Race Headquarters / DSP located in the village of Kumakwane. The DSP is a fully fenced, secure 85 000 square meter “Dakar Style” encampment north of Kumakwane, a small village 25kms west of Gaborone, with dedicated pit areas, wash bays, full bar & catering, all amenities, medical facilities, camping area and spectator grand stands.

Documentation takes place from 14h00 on the 20th and the competitors will race one or two laps of the 250km route; challenging the skills, tenacity and endurance of both rider and machine; then if that is not tough enough, riders will complete the event by doing another one or two laps of a different 250 km route the next day!

Bronze 1 loop ridden either on Day 1 or Day 2 (250 Kms)
Silver 1 loop ridden on each day (500kms)
Gold 2 loops ridden on Day 1 and 1 loop on Day 2
Platinum 2 loops ridden on each day (1000kms)

Across the 500kms of route there are many spectator points and the support of the local population in Botswana is legendary.

The event will not be part of any South African National or Regional championship.

Classes are in based simply on engine size as well as the applicable MSA and FIM technical requirements.
 - Bikes Class A – 2 stroke below 200cc or 4 stroke below 250cc
 - Bikes Class B – all other engine sizes
 - Quads open class
 - Touring class for dual purpose or touring bikes of any engine size.

Within each Class there will be a Ladies category. Within each Class there will a “Golden Oldies” category for riders over 35 years of age
Minimum age for entry is 16 as at June 1st 2012, but only riders over the age 18 at the same date will be allowed to ride the full 500kms each day; younger riders will only do one lap of the 250km route each day (Bronze or Silver).

In order to compete, riders will have to comply with the following:
 - Be holders of a valid and recognised National, Regional or Club competition licience for any form of Bike or Quad racing.
 - Have competed in at least 1event in the 12 months prior to June 1st 2012.
 - Be in possession of adequate medical insurance valid for competitive motorsport in Botswana.
 - Be physically fit and with a MSA medical clearance if applicable.

Over the years, the challenge of riding and surviving the 1000kms through the Botswana bush has drawn many riders and those who have had the skill, spirit, courage and determination proudly display their finisher’s medals and trophies. Stories abound of the race amongst those who have risen to this challenge and completed the race.

Prize money will be dependent on the final number of entries plus trophies and medals await those riders who have the “right stuff” to tackle this event with entries opening on April 15th 2012. Numbers will be restricted to 200 entrants in total and the entry fee will start from R650.

The race is being organized by the team from the FWDCSA with all its more than 30 years’ experience of managing the TDR and promises to be a world class event. The competitors will be supported by a race structure second to none – 50 government officials, 450 policemen and women, 30 Marshals, 12 paramedics, 2 off-road ambulances and 2 road ambulances, a medical helicopter, all of which are managed via full coverage of the route via two radio networks.

Fuel will be transported by the race organisers to the refuel points which will be manned by teams from the ATV Club in Pretoria who have fulfilled this role for many years.
Nearby camping and host of other accommodation options in Gaborone are available to entrants and the organisers have agreements in place to smooth the crossing of the border at designated border posts.

Kom ouboet jy weet jy wil!!!

Ek wens meer van die honde wil dit doen, dan kan ons minder worry oor die Amageza "non-race" race results en mekaar actually bietjie dice in 'n actual race.
